What Is Georgia Green

Georgia Green – homemade 9. July 2010

The term ‘Georgia Green’ is used to name the famous Coca-Cola contour bottles until 1956. It refers to the green tint of these bottles that was caused by impurities of the glass with iron (II) oxide. When the Root Glass Company in Terre Haute, Indiana invented the contour bottle for Coca-Cola with the embossed logotype in 1915 it seems that it was too expensive to use quartz sand that is free of impurities or it was not a technical standard to add dye removers. In the years after 1956 Georgia Green vanished when the Coca-Cola logotype was printed in white onto the bottles. The bottle used to be absoluteley clear from then and the incredible green is a childhood memory today.

Coca-Cola is probably the most valuable brand in Dow Jones Industrial Average and of course the company defends the expressions of its trademarks with determination. But while the bottle itself is a registred trademark the colour of the glass is not. To me the shimmering green is more ‘Coke’ than anything else, the omnipresent red included. The company knows that I’m not the only one. Now and then they bring back Georgia Green as an memento of bygone days and to have a share of retro hypes.

I wonder if it is possible (and if it makes sense) to claim Georgia Green – the colour, not the bottle – as a trademark. Even the ‘Coke Red’ is beyond description as you can find a lot of definitions on the web and in the real world. Walking arount with a spectrophometer one can measure Pantone 185 or Pantone 485 or RGB 235, 45, 46 or RGB 218, 37, 29 or CMYK 0, 100, 100, 0 and more. That’s a result of inconsistent industrial and differing production standards. According to a record at the United States Patent and Trademark Office there is a ‘Coke Red’ defined as Pantone 484.

Well. Since there is no ‘Georgia Green’ we created one by ourselfes. It’s RGB 142, 198, 178. And maybe we should let you know here that ‘Coca-Cola’, ‘Coke’, the ‘Coca-Cola Contour Bottle’ and ‘Coke Red’ are registred trademarks of The Coca-Cola Company.
