Classic deli style sub sandwiches save you a trip to the deli or market whenever you are craving a hearty sandwich. A loaf of Italian bread gets stuffed to the brim with meats, cheese, and veggies for a treat your family will love.
Whenever we go to Pennsylvania, we always stop in DeCarlo’s Market.
And we always order Italian subs.
This is a homemade Italian American version of the Decarlo’s subs we love so much.
What does a sub sandwich consist of?
A sub sandwich is any sandwich on a roll longer than 6 inches long.
The roll gets stuffed with a combination of meats, cheeses, condiments, veggies, and seasonings.
What you put in a sub varies based on the kind of sub you order or make.
What is the difference between a sub, hoagie, hero, and grinder?
Honestly not much.
They are pretty much just different words for the same thing.
The term sub is most popular pretty much everywhere except in Pennsylvania where hoagie is the most popular term.

To make these you’ll need:
- Italian bread– A full loaf of bakery style Italian bread, sliced in half lengthwise,
- Oil and vinegar– To taste
- Veggies– Shredded lettuce, thinly sliced tomatoes, sliced banana pepper rings, and thinly sliced sweet onion
- Deli ham– Thinly sliced
- Beef bologna– Thinly sliced
- Cheese– Sliced American cheese
- Dill pickles– Thinly sliced
- Salt and pepper
How to Make
These Italian hoagies are so easy to make!
To do it, season the inside of both halves of the loaf of bread with oil and vinegar, to taste.
Then, top the bottom half with a thin layer of crisp iceberg lettuce, followed by a layer of thinly sliced tomatoes.
On the veggies add a layer of sliced bologna, followed by a layer of sliced ham, and finish with a layer of sliced American cheese.
Then top all the meats with the sliced banana pepper rings, thinly sliced onion, and pickles.
Season with salt and pepper, to taste.
Top the sub sandwich with the other half of bread, slice into sandwiches, and serve.
Enjoy!
How many people does this serve?
It depends on everyone’s appetites and what else you are serving with it!

But one of these deli style subs can easily feed 6 people- or more if you serve it with sides and appetizers at a party!
Can I make this ahead of time?
I don’t recommend making these until you plan to serve them.
The bread will get soggy.
Storing leftovers
Again, I don’t recommend saving leftover subs because the bread gets soggy.
But if you have leftovers, you can wrap them tightly in plastic wrap and refrigerate them for a day.
Tips and Tricks
- If you want less bread and more room for toppings, you can hollow out the middle of the top and bottom of the Italian loaf.
- You can switch up the meats and add or substitute salami, roast beef, turkey, or whatever you like.
- Sometimes you’ll see deli subs with mayo in addition to oil and vinegar and you can absolutely do that if you like.
