Shemar Moore was born Shemar Franklin Moore in Oakland, California, on April 20, 1970. His father, Sherrod, was a military veteran who served time at San Quentin jail while Shemar was a young boy, and his mother, Marilyn, worked as a business consultant. When Moore was a little child, his mother moved them to Denmark; a few years later, they migrated to Bahrain; Marilyn, who had a degree in mathematics, was able to get employment as a teacher.
Shemar attended a private British school while living in Bahrain, and the family returned to the United States in 1977, settling first in Chico, California, and later in Palo Alto. After graduating from Gunn High School, Moore studied at Santa Clara University with a degree in communication and a minor in theatre arts.
