KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WATE) — There’s a scam going around that is trying to convince you that the United States government is offering a free subsidy. The pitch is $6,400 in your wallet if you qualify. The offer can be found all over TikTok, which millions of people view every day.
Tony Binkley, President/CEO at Better Business Bureau of Greater East Tennessee, sat down with WATE to view videos from TikTok about the unbelievable free money that is supposedly available.

In one of the videos, an automated voice can be heard saying “Yes, the 6,400 credits are real. So I can help you qualify for that quickly. Before we proceed I need to ask you a few questions. But it won’t take more than a couple of minutes.”
Several viewers have asked WATE whether there is really a free government subsidy for those who earn under 50,000 dollars a year. The answer is no, there is no $6,400 subsidy, but these influencers are trying to convince you that the deal is real.

“They’re targeting people who may be desperate, let’s just use that word, to get free $6,400 from the government. And they want you to act quickly, act now. And there are people like this telling you it is real and it’s not real,” said Binkley.
In another video, an influencer can be seen saying don’t believe everything you have been hearing about the offer. She says the subsidy is only good for insurance.
“These ads are very misleading, they tell you that you can get this subsidy and pay for groceries, utilities, pay your bills and all of that. However, that is not true. The subsidy is going to go straight to the insurance carrier,” said the influencers.
“Yes, this one is saying you can’t use the money for anything you want. You can only use it for insurance. But you will have extra money to spend on groceries because if you are using this money for insurance. She is trying to pretend she is protecting us by giving us that information,” said Binkley.

What they want you to do is act now. The intent is to get your personal information.
“They never want you to wait. They don’t want you to talk with anybody else and get the truth from people you know and trust. They want you to trust them,” said Binkley. “If you want to know the truth about that just go into a search engine and type in the $6,400 government grant and see what you get back. You are going to see multiple stories from the government saying it is not real.”
In another TikTok video, an influencer presents a warning, telling people not to fall for the scam.
“Don’t get trapped into it. There is no subsidy going on from the government or anything. It’s all a scam. Okay, guys. Make sure, bye,” said the influencer.
Given its prevalence and potential harm, various consumer protection agencies, government agencies, and financial institutions have all issued warnings about this scam, advising everyone to be vigilant and not to fall for the pitch.
