What Is The Order Of The Tenchi Muyo Series

Tenchi Muyō! is an anime, manga, and light novel series, created by Kajishima Masaki and Hiroshi Hayashi, about a young man named Tenchi Masaki. The original series (Tenchi Muyō! Ryo-Ōki) had six OVA-type episodes, being released in Japan in 1991 and 1992. Such was its popularity that a seventh episode (known as the Tenchi Special) was created, and a solitary chapter called Mihoshi Special was released later on. In 1994, a second OVA was created and released, featuring episodes 8 through 13. From 2003 through 2006, a third series of OVAs have been released, with episodes 14 through 19, focusing on the story of the three goddesses introduced in the second OVA. In addition to that, a twentieth OVA episode was also released later. Due to the complex structure of the Tenchi Muyo! series, we have decided to bring you a complete watch order for the series.

Tenchi Muyo! chronological watch order

In this section, we are going to give you a chronological overview of the works in question:

1. Tenchi Muyo! Ryo-Ohki

Tenchi Muyo! Ryo-Ohki, Season 1 (OVA, 1992-1993)

Katsuhito Masaki finds his grandson Tenchi looking for the keys to his shrine. Tenchi was able to retrieve it from Katsuhito and entered the shrine, accidentally releasing a space pirate named Ryoko who was defeated by Yosho (first prince of Jurai) 700 years ago. Tenchi, who falls asleep on the roof of his school, wakes up to be chased by Ryoko.

Ayeka Masaki Jurai awakens from her slumber and arrives on Earth in pursuit of Ryoko and her half-brother/fiancé Yosho. The fight ensues and before long the guards Azaka and Kamadake capture both Ryoko and Tenchi. Later, while Ayeka is sleeping, Tenchi encounters her younger sister, Sasami Masaki Jurai, who offers Tenchi an escape, with the Guardians chasing them both.

After a brief escape from prison, Ryoko joins them to escape Ayeka’s wrath. As the battle continues, Ryo-Ohki forces Ayeka’s ship out of orbit in the lake near the Misaki house, destroying both ships. Ryoko pulls an egg from the wreckage of her ship and introduces it as her offspring. The egg hatches, revealing Ryo-Ohki, now in Cabbit form.

Ayeka discovers signs of Jurai on Earth and opens up to Tenchi. An incompetent Galaxy cop, Mihoshi Kuramitsu, is sent on patrol to Earth, where wanted criminal Kagato is heading. Meanwhile, Tenchi and his extended family take a short vacation at a local hot spring, and mayhem ensues when Ryoko and Ayeka’s battles destroy the station and crash Mihoshi’s ship, stranding the Galaxy Cop on Earth.

The murderous space criminal Kagato arrives on Earth and grabs Ryoko, saying he is her creator. As Ayeka watches Tenchi’s grandfather fight Kagato, she realizes that Tenchi’s grandfather is her brother Yosho. Tenchi, Ryoko, Ayeka, and Mihoshi pursue him aboard Ryo-Ohki (which transformed into its spaceship form and combined with the remains of Ayeka Ryu-Oh’s ship).

The girls head to Kagato’s ship to avenge Tenchi. Meanwhile, on Earth, Sasami senses that Tenchi is in trouble and summons Tsunami, his own Jurassic Battleship, to save him from impending death. Mihoshi accidentally releases from Kagato’s captivity a 20,000-year-old scientific genius, Washu, who turns out to be Ryoko’s (and Ryo-Ohki’s) true creator, and Tenchi returns to face Kagato in a fight to the death.

Life after the Kagato incident is still chaotic in the Masaki household. Ayeka, with help from Washu, plants a replacement Ryu-Oh seedling to raise a new ship. Ryoko and Ayeka, spurred on by reading romance comics, try all sorts of methods to win Tenchi’s love. To eliminate the competition, they have Mihoshi report to Galaxy Police Headquarters and capture Washu in his lab in the closet under the stairs. However, Ryoko and Ayeka have a fist fight against Tenchi again.

“Tenchi Muyo! Mihoshi Special” (OVA, 1994)

As usual, Mihoshi Kuramitsu slept on the patio of the house while everyone (except Ryoko) did the chores. After Ayeka questions Mihoshi’s qualifications as a Galaxy cop, Mihoshi shares the story of her and her partner Kiyone’s greatest adventure: the Ultra-Energy Matter caper. In the story, Mihoshi plays House Masaki as different story characters: Ryoko as a thief, Tenchi as a galaxy cop, Ayeka as Tenchi’s heiress fiancé, Sasami as an apprentice detective, Washu as a mad scientist (not far from the imagination) and Ryo-Ohki as… Ryo-Ohki. As the investigation progresses (not to mention the love rivalries between “Ryoko” and “Ayeka”), the detectives stumble upon a plot to destroy the universe.

Tenchi Muyo! Ryo-Ohki, Season 2 (OVA, 1994-1995)

Tenchi and the girls were assigned to take care of her little cousin Taro for a few days. As expected, chaos ensues and soon the girls are in rags. It’s up to Washu to show them how to take care of a baby, but even with their guardianship they can’t cope, so Washu takes the job on his own. Tenchi and his family return to the local hot spring resort for the holidays, but first have to fix the place as they destroyed it earlier.

While working at the inn, the others see a ghostly figure dressed in white. Meanwhile, Sasami is acting strangely and she has a secret to uncover about her past. Ryoko accidentally damages a dress that belonged to Tenchi’s late mother. When Tenchi yells at him, he also accidentally angers Ryo-Ohki. Heartbroken Ryo-Ohki sulks in Washu’s lab, where his feelings affect a colony of shapeshifting creatures (the same creatures used as a base for Ryoko and Ryo-Ohki).

Tenchi apologizes to Ryo-Ohki and picks some carrots, but the rest of his friends find that the creatures have escaped from the lab and head towards Tenchi. Eventually, Ryo-Ohki assimilates the creatures and becomes human. The devious Dr. On orders from the mysterious Lady Tokimi, Clay sends his robot slave Zero to earth to capture Washu.

Zero transforms into an exact replica of Ryoko to infiltrate House Masaki, but repeatedly fails to complete her mission as she simply cannot cope with the wave of emotions she experiences when around Tenchi . Zero fails in his mission to conquer Washu and returns to Dr. Clayback. Tenchi, Ayeka, and Washu pursue them to find and save the real Ryoko.

As Washu Dr. Confronting Clay, she reveals that she and Clay were once contestants for the leadership of the Academy of Sciences, but Clay was disowned for abusing his scientific talents. He attempts to destroy Tenchi in order to manipulate Washu, but Zero betrays him and he is forced to destroy his ship to escape.

Ryoko agrees to assimilate Zero so she can more easily express her true feelings towards Tenchi. Tenchi’s life is turned upside down again when visitors from Jurai arrive. Funaho, Tenchi’s Jurassic great-grandmother, and her sister Misaki, who is also Ayeka and Sasami’s mother, visit Earth. Funaho came to see her son Yosho and made Washu an attractive offer. Shortly after, Misaki and Funaho’s husband, King Azusa of Jurai, arrives and tells Ayeka that she must marry the man he has already chosen, Seiryo. The only way to save Ayeka from this fate is for Tenchi to duel him!
