If you are new to jet skiing and thought intimidates you a little, you are not alone. That is why we’ve put together some tips to help ease the feeling of going into the unknown unprepared. We promise you won’t regret the ride!

Getting Ready: Safety Measures

When renting a jet ski from Wind & Water Sports, an experienced professional will give you a briefing to ensure your safety, as well as that of others.

Engine Shut-Off Clip

As in any watersport, riding a wave runner requires you to put safety first. One safety measure of a jet ski is the engine shut-off clip. This clip attaches you to the engine. Should you fall off the wave runner, the engine instantly shuts down, keeping you and others safe. However, it’s only a precautionary measure; most responsible jet ski riders won’t ever fall off.

Life Vests

Of course, you should always wear a life jacket when riding on a wave runner. Whether you are riding for the first time, or have been doing it for years, never leave your life vest behind. No matter how good you are or how well you swim, things happen, and an unconscious person cannot swim! Secure the vest properly before starting the engine.

Moving Onto the Water

Step onto the wave runner before placing your hands firmly on the handles. It is easy to firmly grip the cushioned handles throughout your ride making sure that you remain in full control of the jet ski. Engage the throttle slowly until you reach a speed of about 10 miles per hour. You should never go faster than this when you are near the beach for your safety along with the safety of others.

Turning

One of the facets of riding a wave runner that many novices struggle with is turning. It is a good idea that you practice turning near the shore before you pick up speed or get too far out in the water where you will encounter other wave runners and boats. When turning, think about maintaining your balance.

Speeding Up

Once you master turning while keeping your balance, you will be ready to pick up speed as you move further from the shore. Feel the nose of the wave runner rise out of the water as you pick up speed. While this unnerves many novices, it is perfectly normal, so you can relax and enjoy the ride.

Be Prepared for the Inevitable Jump

As your skill level improves and you take things faster, your jet ski is likely to hop off waves. As you feel the jet ski lift into the air, lift your buttocks a few inches off the seat. This allows you to enjoy a more comfortable ride and minimize impact.

If you have any questions about riding a wave runner, then make sure to ask the knowledgeable staff at Wind & Water Sports. They will be very glad to answer any questions that you have along with renting you the equipment to enjoy riding a wave runner.
