It was Malcolm Fraser the made the phrase “life wasn’t meant to be easy” popular back in 1974. Unfortunately the media misquoted Fraser. The actual phrase is, ‘Life is not meant to be easy, my child; but take courage: it can be delightful’. When taken out of context, life wasn’t meant to be easy, makes life sound like a terrible proposition. However, when we look at the full quote, we see that life, when people strive and fight for what they want, can, and often is, a wonderful experience.

In this life no one is going to do anything for you. There is no knight in shining armour coming to save you, and you will not be riding off into the sunset. In fact, in our current economic environment, you can no longer rely on the government or you employer to look after you. You have to do it yourself, and it is not easy. But it is worth it.

To be able to have the life you want, you need to know what it is that you want first. Do you have dreams and goals? To you long for a better life than going to work every day? Or are you happy to work 40 to 50 years of your life to retire on, most likely, less money than your earning now?

Now if you are happy to work for the rest of your life then you may as well stop reading now. To be honest the rest of this article is not for you. However, if you want more than what you currently have then keep reading. I am about to tell you how to achieve every dream you ever wanted.

Step one

You have to have dreams that you want to achieve. Normally they are called goals. Bill Gates, Richard Branson, and Steve Jobs all had goals. They knew what they wanted to achieve. They saw a better life in running a business and developing systems than going to work every day for someone else.

Step two

They were passionate about their goals. They took time to develop their passion and create a reason to work hard and fight to achieve their dreams. Every person has a reason to fight, it could be for more money, but usually entrepreneurs want more than money, normally the reason to fight is related to more time with loved ones and to make a difference in people’s lives.

Step three

This is the hardest part of all. This is taking a risk and learning. We can all dream and be passionate but a lot of people stop when it comes to taking a risk. Fear of failure when we take a risk can override passion. There is two ways to get past the fear. One is learning through books and courses, which is essentially learning from other people’s experience. And two, is to learn from your mistakes. Start your business, make the mistakes (and you will), learn from your mistakes and try again. If your will to fight for a better life is strong you will get back up again after every failure and keep going.

I think Jim Rohn said it the best. “If you don’t design you own life plan, chances are you will fall into someone else’s plan. And guess what they have planned for you? Not much.”

No, life wasn’t meant to be easy, but it is worth fighting for and it will be delightful. It is worth more than going to work every day over the best years of your life only to retire poor. So set your goals get passionate and be willing to learn and take risks. Again it won’t be easy but it will be worth it. And remember that most things in life that are worth achieving are never easy.
