What Might Make A Scary Noise In The Basement

Rattling

Are you hearing a constant rattling sound coming from your basement? If your ductwork is older, the seal and connections between the sheet metal network could start to loosen over time and cause this sound as a result.

Popping and Banging

The weather in Canada can change quickly and dramatically. This fluctuation can eventually force the walls within the duct system to move. As a result, it can create popping or banging sounds.

Booming

The ductwork endures many variations with the temperature, but this happens most frequently at the plenum and duck trunk link. Dampers are typically used here to reduce the impact and noise that can occur. However, if the damper or expansion joint is insufficient, it will produce this loud echoing sound.

Shaking or Vibrating

Clogged filters and dirty ductwork that’s accumulated with dust and debris are the most common reasons why your system could be making sounds that are shaking, rattling or vibrating in nature. Getting them professionally cleaned can often solve this problem. In some cases, a clogged filter can cause a big dip in pressure too, leading to vibrating or knocking sounds.

Thumping and Roaring

Thumping or a roaring noise can occur when lint or other debris gets stuck in the blower wheel. This could also be caused when the blower wheel loosens or wears out. You can take a look in the dryer vent to see if the airflow is weak and obstructed.

Scraping Sounds

Is there a weird scraping sound coming from the dryer? Take a look at the drum slides. These have felt, nylon or cork backing which let the rotation of the drum happen freely. If you’re hearing a scraping sound, this could be a red flag that the backing needs to be replaced.

Humming

If you’re hearing a humming sound coming from your HVAC unit, this usually isn’t anything to worry about. However, if that humming noise starts to become more noticeable and out of the ordinary, it’s worth having it inspected. Remember, your HVAC system has a big job to do and here in Canada, we rely on it almost constantly to keep our interiors comfortable. The last thing you want is to face a broken system during a major heat wave. Try to locate the source of the sound by checking the components. If it persists, it’s might be worth calling in someone to look at it.

Thwapping

A thwapping type of sound isn’t always a cause for concern, but it can indicate that there’s something stuck in the blower’s fan blades. It can also wear out your unit faster. To tell if this is the source, see if you can hear the sound as the airflow passes through.

When you start to hear strange noises coming from your basement, don’t ignore them. Even minor problems can lead to major repairs and replacements if they’re not dealt with properly.
