The hex driver end, featuring a six-sided “male” or allen end, is used for servicing the transfer case.
What Size Wrench Do You Need for an Oil Drain Plug?
What size wrench to use for an oil drain plug depends on the size of the oil drain plug itself, which is a long bolt head. There is no universal oil plug size, but they do come in just a few several standard sizes, such as ¼ inch (.6 centimeters), 3/8 inch (.9 centimeters), ½ inch (1.3 centimeters), etc. Sockets also come in different sizes to fit bolt heads, such as six points (hexagon, or “hex” for short), and eight points (double square).

Locate the oil drain plug on your car’s oil plate. Place the box end securely around the oil drain plug and turn counterclockwise to loosen and remove. Let all the oil drain out of the oil pan and into a reliable oil drain bin. Once the oil is all drained (the amount will depend on the type of vehicle), wipe the oil drain plug with a rag and inspect for any wear and tear. If you note any deterioration or damage, get a replacement oil plug.
Reinstall the oil drain plug using the wrench’s box end, turning clockwise. Do not over-tighten. Now you can proceed to change the oil filter and add new oil.
Changing the Transfer Case Oil
Locate the transfer case on the underside of your vehicle. Note that some cars may have two oil plugs on the transfer case. The top plug is the fill plug, and the bottom plug is the drain plug. If your car has two oil plugs, remove the fill plug first. Using the hex driver end, insert this into the socket and turn counterclockwise to loosen and remove the plug. With a drain pan positioned underneath, repeat the same steps for the drain plug. Let all the fluid drain from the transfer case into the pan. Wipe and inspect the drain plugs, then tighten the drain plug back on using the hex driver end. Refill the transfer case with the proper fluid. Then replace and tighten the fill plug using the wrench.
Changing Differential Fluid
Changing differential fluid follows much the same process as changing transfer case fluid. Locate the differential drain plugs. Use the wrench’s hex driver end to remove the fill plug, then remove the drain plug. Once all fluid is drained into an oil catch pan, replace the drain plug. Refill the differential with the proper fluid and tighten the fill plug back on.
