What is a Souvenir?

A souvenir is a token or item that you bring back from a place you’ve visited. It serves as a reminder of your trip and can range from t-shirts to trinkets to fridge magnets.

But let’s be real, we’ve all bought a random souvenir that we didn’t love or really even need. We’ve all traveled somewhere and said “Ugh, I need something to bring home to show everyone!”. Well, in this article, you’re going to find 35 Hungarian souvenirs that you can do just that with!

Best Food Budapest Souvenirs

If you’re anything like me, you love to eat what you buy and there’s no better souvenir than food. Why? Because food is memories, emotions, thoughts, feelings, and desires all packed into one.

Food makes for some of the best souvenirs because it allows you to transport back in time to a place where you remember feeling happy, excited, or even in love! Which brings me to our first Budapest souvenir…

1. Stühmer Chocolates – one of the most popular souvenirs from Budapest

Chocolate! What better way to commemorate your trip to Budapest than with a big ol’ bar of chocolate (or any one of the other famous Stühmer chocolate bites.)

World famous for their intricate flavors and presentation, as well as their ability to consistently master the classics, Stühmer chocolates are definitely something to bring home to your family or coworkers (or just hoard for yourself).

Over the years, they have become exceedingly popular for their holiday products made out of chocolate around Christmas and New Years (I love their milk chocolate teddy bears), their decadent snack bars that are perfect if you’re on the go, and especially their elegant praline boxes that make for the perfect special occasion.

✔️ Pro Tip: If you’re visiting Budapest with a special someone, pick up an assortment box of their elegant praline and surprise them with it at a picnic – it’s sure to make just about anyone happy.

If you want to learn more about how Stühmer chocolates became so famous, you can read their full story here.

2. Unicum

Just like how the French may sip on Pastis after a meal, the Hungarians sip on Unicum. This slightly sweet Hungarian herbal liqueur is extremely popular in Budapest and can be found pretty much anywhere.

Not only is it drank as an apéritif (before a meal), but it is also drunk as a digestif (after a meal or with dessert). Unicum has a delicate balance between sweet and bitter, and is the perfect way to enjoy a classic Hungarian meal.

It has become so popular, thanks to its makers known as the Zwack family, they have actually created an entire museum around the popular beverage! Stop into the Zwack Unicum Museum which showcases the Zwack family history and the creation of Unicum liqueur.

I have actually included the Zwack Unicum Museum in my list of the Top 25 Best Museums in Budapest, so be sure to check it out if you’re planning on traveling to Budapest anytime in the future!

3. Pálinka

Ah, delicious Pálinka! This popular fruit brandy (also known as a fruit spirit) was created due to a famine that was widespread across Hungary in medieval times.

At the time, the King decreed that no valuable ingredients, particularly wheat, be used in the formation of alcoholic beverages. Thus, Pálinka was born with fruit of every form! This included mashed, pureed, juiced, and practically any other way they found that could successfully release the most flavor from the fruit.

Originating from the Carpathian Mountains basin, this unique brandy makes for a delicious digestif or apéritif, just like Unicum. This is why you often see people drinking one or the other, and most locals that you talk to will prefer one to the other.

In my opinion, try both while you’re in Hungary, then bring one (or both) home as souvenirs from Budapest!

4. Hungarian Beigli

Also referred to as a “poppy seed roll” or “walnut roll”, this classic Hungarian sweet makes for one of the best souvenirs to bring home to your family.

Made of a sweet yeast dough filled with either poppy seed or walnut paste and usually topped with powdered sugar, these rolls are often made during the holiday season (particularly at Christmas), though they can definitely be found year-round in most Hungarian patisseries.

Click the picture to check online rates & availability

✔️ Pro Tip: Look for beigli that have been made with Hungarian ingredients, like Hungarian flour and walnuts before buying. On more rare occasions, beigli is created in big factories overseas and shipped in for tourist consumption. This is still good, but you should really try the local stuff!

You could also pick up some traditional Hungarian ingredients to bring home, so you can prepare them yourself! But, I would recommend looking into a cooking class in Budapest first, so you can learn how to do it from a practiced master.

5. Paprika – one of the most authentic souvenirs from Budapest you can buy

Did you know that paprika is actually the national spice of Hungary? Yeah… it’s that good. It is made from grinding different varieties of capsicum peppers and is used in a variety of Hungarian dishes, like goulash.

If you want to bring home some authentic paprika from Budapest as a souvenir, be sure to buy it from a specialty store or market (like the Great Market Hall) rather than just grabbing it off the shelves at a supermarket. Not all paprika in Budapest is created equal, and some is just as generally made as the stuff you find in any shopping center around the world.

It’s delicious with practically anything, from scrambled eggs to roasted veggies. And don’t worry, there are many levels of heat in paprika so you can choose whatever suits your taste buds best!

6. Spicy Hungarian Sausages & Cured Meats

Hungarian cuisine is known for its flavorful and spicy meats, ranging from different types of sausages to smoked and cured meats like salami and ham.

Take some home as souvenirs to enjoy, or even better, try them while you’re in Budapest at a traditional Hungarian eatery! Many restaurants will offer “tasting platters” that allow you to sample a variety of different meats and sausages. Do yourself a favor and be adventurous and go for it!

Don’t forget to also pick up some tasty Hungarian mustard to go with your meats as well. It’s a must-have condiment for any sausage lover. Trust me, you won’t be disappointed.

Just make sure that if you’re bringing meats and sausages back home with you, they are properly packaged and fit within your country’s regulations for meat imports. Don’t let all that delicious Hungarian flavor go to waste!

✔️ Pro Tip: The Hungarian paprika goes perfectly with the spicy sausage making for the perfect Budapest souvenir.

7. Tokaji wine from Tokaj – this incredible dessert is one of the best Hungarian wines you can buy

In the northeastern reaches of Hungary, the small town of Tokaj feels like it was formed simply to produce the world-famous Tokaji sweet wine. Sweet and rich, this dessert wine was actually referred to as the “king of wines and the wine of kings” by King Louis XIV of France.

Produced with special grapes that have been affected by botrytis (a mold that actually brings out the sweetness in grapes), the result is a sweet wine that pairs perfectly with Hungarian desserts like palacsinta and beigli.

Tokaji can range in price and quality, so definitely do some research before purchasing a bottle (or more) as a Budapest souvenir. And if you have the chance, try a tasting while visiting Tokaj to really discover the true flavors of this amazing Hungarian wine.

✔️ Pro Tip: In Hungary, it’s common to order a glass of Tokaji wine with a slice of lemon or apple dessert. The tartness and acidity of the fruits pair perfectly with the sweetness of the wine!

8. Zserbó – perfect souvenirs from Budapest to enjoy on the plane or train home

Originally created by a Swiss chocolatier (and thank goodness he did!), this decadent cake combines layers of pastry, apricot jam, walnuts, and a top coat of chocolate to create a dessert that will have you coming back for more.

Nowadays, you can also find the apricot layer to be swapped out with everything from honey to apples and a variety of other fillings!

Zserbó can be found in many Hungarian cafes and patisseries, but the best place to buy it as a Budapest souvenir is at a specialty shop like Ruszwurm or Gerbeaud. They are known for having the best zserbó in all of Budapest and trust me, you won’t be disappointed.

This isn’t exactly a dessert that is easy to bring home with you, so I recommend keeping it in your hand if you are traveling light, or just enjoying it before you make your way to the airport. Take plenty of pictures, and perhaps try the recipe at home!

Best Budapest Souvenirs for Your Home

Now that we’ve gone over the best Hungarian sweets and treats to indulge in, it’s time to take a peek at the best Budapest souvenirs to fill your home!

From hand-painted eggs to Hungarian secret boxes, there is truly something for everyone.

9. Christmas Ornament

Who doesn’t love a handpainted ornament? Even if you don’t celebrate Christmas, these make for beautiful decorations in any home. Pick up a ceramic ornament with traditional Hungarian folk patterns or go for something more unique like a beaded rooster or hand-carved wooden Santas!

If you do celebrate Christmas, these are perfect for hanging on your Christmas tree or even hanging from the inside of windows so they can be seen from the exterior of your home. Plus, they make fantastic gifts for family members, loved ones, and friends!

Just be sure to check the tag or bottom if you’re looking for an authentic souvenir from Budapest. Some of the more classic designs will be mass manufactured in factories from China or Thailand, so if you’re hoping for a locally made one, then go shopping in some of the stores I have mentioned below under the FAQ.

10. Hungarian Porcelain or Pottery

Hungary has a long history of producing beautiful and delicate porcelain and pottery.

One popular style is Zsolnay porcelain, known for its colorful and intricate designs. This type of pottery originated in the town of Pécs, making it a great souvenir if you happen to visit this southern city during your trip to Hungary.

Another option is Herend porcelain, which has been around since the early 1800s and is named after the town of Herend, which is home to the world’s largest porcelain factory! If you’re looking for a higher-end souvenir, check out some of Herend’s ornate and handpainted animal figurines or dinnerware sets.

But if you aren’t ready to invest in a more expensive piece, never fear! You can still find plenty of traditional Hungarian pottery in Budapest’s Central Market Hall or even in gift shops throughout the city.

These make for beautiful additions to any kitchen or dining room and will always be the perfect souvenir from Budapest to remind you of your time in Hungary.

11. Ajka Crystal

Another popular souvenir from Hungary is Ajka crystal, known for its colorful and artistic lead glasses that can be found all over Hungary as well as in the United States where they are referred to as “The Romanov Collection”.

You can find everything from wine glasses to vases to figurines at specialty stores in Budapest or even at the popular Great Market Hall. And while they may be a bit on the pricier side, these pieces are sure to brighten up any room in your home and make for fantastic conversation pieces.

Plus, they come in beautiful packaging, making them easy to transport back home with you. They also offer worldwide shipping, so if you’re nervous about damaging your new crystal you can have it shipped directly to your door instead! You can check out their rates and their online website here.

So next time you’re hosting a dinner party or just looking for some new decorations, consider adding some Ajka crystal to your collection!

12. Hand Painted Eggs

It’s pretty obvious that these colorful eggs would make the perfect addition to any Easter party, but they can also be used year-round as a fun and unique decoration.

These eggs are crafted using a wax-resist method called “pisanka” or “kistka” (a hot wax pen), where hot wax is applied to the egg’s surface before being dipped in dye. This creates beautiful patterns and designs that have been used in Hungarian folk art for centuries. And believe it or not, these eggs are real!

They remove the internal content by making tiny holes and very carefully blowing the raw egg out.

You can often find these eggs for sale at markets or even in specialty stores throughout Budapest. And if you want to try your hand at creating them yourself, there are even workshops available where you can learn this traditional technique!

They make for lovely traditional Budapest souvenirs and are also great holiday gifts due to their colorful appearance, as well.

13. Lavender Products – one of the ultimate souvenirs from Budapest for relaxation

When you think of Lavender, chances are you don’t think of Budapest, but more likely the Provence region of France. And you wouldn’t be wrong! But, believe it or not, Hungary is actually quite known for its lavender production, as well!

You can find plenty of lavender-scented products all over Budapest and throughout Hungary. From soaps to lotions to essential oils (my personal favorite for putting in the bathtub), these products make for the perfect relaxing souvenir from Budapest to bring a bit of Hungary’s lavender fields back home with you.

You can also find dried bundles of lavender for sale, which make for lovely decorations in your home or as gifts for friends and family. So next time you’re in need of some stress relief, you’ll have the smell of lavender from Budapest to calm your worries.

What’s great is lavender is actually very affordable as well, so if you’re looking for a cheap Budapest souvenir that isn’t a typical key chain, then this could be a great option for you.

14. The Raven of Matthias

This symbol of Hungary is well represented throughout Budapest, particularly by the raven statue on one of the towers of Matthias Church. Before his rule in the mid to late 15th century, Matthias Corvinus, before he became the King of Hungary, received a raven with a ring in its beak from his mother… or at least that’s how the legend goes.

The raven traveled all the way from Transylvania to Prague, and thus crowned Matthias “the boy king of ravens”.

Since then, the image of the raven with the ring became a symbol of the Hungarian crest, and even joined the family name of Corvinus, meaning “raven” in Latin. You can read more about the story here if you are interested.

After his rule, King Matthias Cornivus was named the greatest king in Hungarian history and the raven still acts as an important symbol of the country today.

You can find raven symbols in different shops and stores around the city, and it certainly makes for a unique Budapest souvenir since it’s not as common to see as other items on this list.

15. Magyar kártya – Hungarian Playing Cards

Ever heard of playing cards that only have 32 cards in the deck? I didn’t think so. But, in Hungary, that’s actually the standard for playing card games! Instead of your typical 52 cards, Hungarian playing card decks have only 32 and lack the traditional Jack, Queen, and King cards.

Instead, they feature four different suits: Acorns, Bells (tök), Leaves (zöld), and Hearts. The cards also have beautiful artwork on them, often featuring traditional Hungarian motifs and designs. You can learn all about what the cards mean and how to play traditional games here.

So if you’re looking for something a little different than the usual playing cards, or want to try out some new card games, grab yourself a deck of Magyar kártya while in Budapest for an awesome and unique souvenir idea!

They are without a doubt one of the best souvenirs from Hungary you can buy.

16. Hungarian Puzzle Box – one of the most unique Budapest souvenirs you can buy

Often referred to as a “Hungarian secret box”, this wooden puzzle box is truly a unique Budapest souvenir. It may look like a simple wooden box, but in order to open it, you must solve a series of puzzles and maneuvers!

These boxes make for great gifts or even just as a fun challenge for yourself. Pick one up to put in your living room as a fun conversation starter for when you have guests over, or challenge your kids to see who can get it open the fastest.

Often found in gift shops and independent stores around Budapest, these puzzle boxes are definitely a must-have for any puzzle lover or anyone looking for something different to bring back as a souvenir.

Plus, just think of the bragging rights you’ll have when you successfully solve it and show it off to all your friends and family!

17. Hungarian Artwork

Hungary has a rich history and culture, reflected in its artwork from various time periods and movements. And lucky for us, Budapest is filled with galleries and museums showcasing stunning Hungarian artwork.

For those looking to bring a piece of Hungary back home with them, purchasing Hungarian artwork as a souvenir is definitely a great option.

Whether it’s a traditional painting, modern sculpture, or even just a printed poster or photograph, bringing home some Hungarian art will not only serve as a reminder of your trip to Budapest, but also allow you to appreciate and admire Hungarian culture and creativity every day.

✔️ Pro Tip: While it is quick and easy to go into any gallery or art studio and buy a painting or piece of artwork, you’re practically guaranteed to overpay. It’s also far more difficult to estimate the value of a piece if you aren’t sure what you’re looking at. If you can, take a photo or remember what the piece looks like and get the artist’s name to contact them directly. 9 times out of 10, you’ll save a significant amount of money and you may even get to meet the original artist!

18. Embroidered Towels – these Budapest souvenirs make for amazing gifts

Embroidery is a popular art form in Hungary, with many pieces featuring traditional Hungarian designs and motifs. And what better way to display this beautiful artwork than on a decorative towel that can be displayed in your kitchen?

These embroidered towels make for a beautiful and practical Budapest souvenir, as they can be used daily in the kitchen or bathroom to remember your trip to Hungary (though I’ve always kept mine simply for decoration). Plus, their unique and intricate designs are sure to impress any guests that come over.

You can often find these towels at gift shops and markets around Budapest, but for a larger selection with even more traditional Hungarian designs, check out Mesebolt or Burda-Verena Stúdió Berena Kft

Click the picture to check online rates & availability

✔️ Pro Tip: Be sure to look for ones made in Hungary for the best quality. Those that are outsourced to other countries tend to feel thin and cheap. Also, if you’re buying multiple towels, mixing and matching them makes for a fun and vibrant addition to your kitchen!

19. A New Tablecloth with Hungarian Stitching

Similar to the embroidered towels, a beautiful tablecloth with hand-done stitchwork is easily one of the best souvenirs from Budapest you can buy.

It’s perfect for when you have guests over and want to serve some fancy charcuterie boards, or just for everyday use to add some traditional Hungarian flair to your dining room.

You can find these tablecloths at markets and souvenir shops around Budapest, with many featuring intricate designs and stitchwork. And because they are hand-embroidered and made with quality materials, they are sure to last you a long time.

Fun Souvenirs from Budapest for Kids

Alright, we’ve done plenty of shopping for you, now it’s time to look out for the kids!

Whether you have children of your own or have a special niece or nephew in mind, these are some fun souvenirs from Budapest to bring home for them.

20. Nostalgic Books from an Antique Store

Why not pick up a book or two from one of the city’s many antique stores? You never know what gems you may find, and there’s just something special about giving a child a book that tells a story they’ll remember well into adulthood.

Plus, bringing home Hungarian children’s books is also a great way to introduce them to Hungarian culture and language. Head over to Fordova Antikvitás on Hajós u. 18 or Opera Antiques on Irányi u. 7 for some old-fashioned (and potentially rare) book hunting.

Besides, even if you pick a book out for a child in mind, let’s be real… you’re probably going to want to read it too! Books are one of the best souvenirs because they allow you to think creatively and can be passed on to other people.

21. Rubik’s Cube – the perfect Budapest souvenir for kids

Now, I know you’ve probably heard of a Rubik’s cube, and if you haven’t, you have to buy this product when you’re in Budapest! This classic puzzle never goes out of style and is always a hit with kids (and adults) alike.

Originating from Budapest, the Rubik’s Cube is one of Hungary’s most iconic inventions and a great souvenir to bring back home. You can find them at most toy or gift shops around Budapest, with some even featuring customized designs.

The idea of the toy is to get every side of the cube to have one solid color, but trust me when I say it’s harder than it looks. It’s a fun challenge for all ages and guaranteed to provide hours of entertainment (and maybe even some frustration). But hey, that’s all part of the experience!

22. Ördöglakat Mechanical Puzzle

Often made out of wood or metal, these mechanical puzzles are a fun brain teaser for kids (and adults, let’s be real). The goal is to figure out how to separate and then put back together all of the interlocking pieces.

You can find these puzzles at gift shops and markets around Budapest, with some even featuring traditional Hungarian designs. They make for a unique and creative souvenir from Budapest, and are perfect for when you need to disconnect from electronics for a bit.

They’re also great for entertaining kids on planes or trains since they can be easily put in a purse or backpack and can be dropped on numerous occasions without much damage being done to the product.

If you’re thinking “Finally! A toy my child can use!”, then you should definitely give the Ördöglakat Mechanical Puzzle a try on your next trip to Budapest.

23. Hungarian Dolls & Toys – these are great souvenirs from Budapest for kids

Traditional Hungarian dolls, or “matyó” dolls, are a popular souvenir to bring back from Budapest. These dolls are dressed in traditional Matyó clothing and feature intricately embroidered designs.

They often appear sculpted due to the fine detailing of the cloth material over the wire, with the head often being ceramic.

You can find these dolls at souvenir shops and markets around the city, or even at some Hungarian folk art galleries like the Kiscelli Museum in Buda (though they likely won’t be for sale here).

Hungarian toys are also a cute and unique souvenir option to bring back for kids. Traditional wooden toys, such as spinning tops, or Hungarian card games like “Csipke” are a fun and interactive way to introduce kids to Hungarian culture.

Plus, they can be played with over and over again, providing long-lasting entertainment for the little ones (and maybe even some of the adults too!)

As one of the best souvenirs from Hungary, don’t pass up the opportunity to pick up one of these beautiful dolls!

24. Körtemuzsika Instrument

This beautiful wooden wind instrument, also known as a “hümmögő”, or “buzzing” in English”, is often made out of pear wood (and sometimes clay) and can produce a range of tones.

The Körtemuzsika often features traditional Hungarian designs, making it the perfect unique souvenir from Budapest for music lovers.

You can find these instruments at gift shops and markets around the city, but they’ll primarily be found in places like the Central Market Hall.

Other Amazing Souvenirs from Budapest

The next souvenirs on this list may be considered a little unconventional, but it’s important to remember that souvenirs don’t have to be typical. They don’t have to be expected or anything that someone else would expect you to have.

The souvenirs below are fun and completely unexpected. I am going to say that the right thing to do would be to ask for these souvenirs, but if you don’t, well… that’s up to you.

25. A towel from the Budapest Thermal Baths

If you’re heading to Budapest, chances are you’ve already booked your tickets to the Széchenyi Thermal Baths. And if you haven’t, you probably are planning on it for after you arrive.

The Széchenyi Thermal Baths are famous worldwide as being the largest medicinal bath in Europe. Don’t worry, there’s no actual medicine in the water, but the natural vitamins and minerals from the natural thermal springs beneath the baths are supposedly good for you.

If you visit, you have the option of paying for a locker and a rental towel, or you’re also allowed to buy a towel on the spot.

And it’s not just any ordinary towel (although they do have those at a cheaper cost, as well), the special keepsake towels have the Széchenyi Thermal Bath branding and make for a unique and fun keepsake from Budapest!

26. A Pint Glass from a Ruins Bar

Similar to the Széchenyi Thermal Baths, if you’re going to Budapest then there’s a good chance that you’ve heard of their ruins bars. Known for their funky and eccentric decorations, these bars are located in abandoned buildings throughout Budapest and often have outdoor or underground seating areas.

What better way to remember your time in a Budapest ruins bar than by bringing back a pint glass as a souvenir? Some ruins bars have unique branding on their glassware, while others do not, so keep this in mind if you want one that doesn’t look like any old pint glass.

Szimpla Kert is exceedingly popular and is likely to have merch that you can buy from them, whereas most other ruins bars won’t and you may need to ask the bartender if you can buy one for a few Hungarian Forints.

Ruins bars are such a fun and unique way of exploring the city, so even if you don’t plan on picking up a souvenir at one, I highly recommend visiting at least one even if you only have a short time in Budapest.

Just be mindful that some ruins bars have more of a reputation than others, so be sure to do your research before heading out to ensure you’re safe in Budapest.

27. A Hungarian Recipe from a Cooking Class – one of the most authentic Budapest souvenirs you can get

Hungary has long been known for its exquisite cuisine, from its famous goulash and Chicken Paprikash (my absolute favorite) to its kürtőskalács (chimney cake). They have mastered the use of spices like paprika and garlic, along with utilizing the best locally-sourced ingredients.

If you have time during your trip to Budapest, I highly recommend signing up for a cooking class where you can learn how to make some of these famous Hungarian dishes.

Many of these classes also offer recipe cards or booklets so that you can continue making the food at home, making them delicious and practical souvenirs to bring back with you. Plus, think of how impressed your friends and family will be when you whip up some Hungarian cuisine for them!

One personal regret I have from my last visit to Budapest was not figuring out how to make Chicken Paprikash exactly the way they do, and when I return you better believe I’ll be signing up for a cooking class so I can recreate this special dish at home.

28. A Photo Album to Commemorate Your Trip to Budapest

Yes, it may seem a little old school in this age of social media, but there’s nothing quite like the feeling of flipping through a physical photo album and reliving memories. After you’ve taken tons of photos throughout your trip to Budapest, why not pick up a cute album to put them in?

Even I, at age 26 (yes, just call me a millennial), still have a photo album where I print all of my photos out at the local photo center and write the date and where they were taken on the back. It’s fun for my grandparents to see all of my travels and it’s a great way to keep the specialness of photography alive.

You can find photo albums at most gift shops or even at some larger supermarkets. Plus, it’s a lot more personal than just posting your photos on Instagram for all to see and future you will be so glad you did it!

29. Hungarian Clothing – one of the most authentic souvenirs from Budapest

Hungary is known for its beautiful embroidery, and there’s no better way to bring a little bit of Hungary back with you than by purchasing some clothing adorned with traditional patterns and designs.

You can find these at markets, such as the Central Market Hall, or at specialty stores throughout Budapest (the Retrock Designer Vintage Store on Anker köz is particularly good). These make for great gifts for friends and family back home, or even just a special treat for yourself.

It may feel odd or even silly to go shopping in a vintage Hungarian store, but this is where you can find amazing deals on clothing from real Hungarian designers!

Not everything is going to look old school, so give it a chance and perhaps you’ll walk away with something totally unique that you never would have thought of buying for yourself.

Going clothes shopping in Budapest is really fun, even if you don’t necessarily find something that suits your style.

Classic Budapest Souvenirs to Bring Home

Okay, no souvenir list would be complete without the classics.

If you’re traveling on a tight budget or simply want something simple and cute to remember your trip by, then these souvenirs from Budapest will be right up your alley.

30. Key Chain – the most classic of souvenirs from Budapest you can buy

A small but practical souvenir option is picking up a key chain with the Hungarian flag or a famous Budapest landmark on it. These can be found at most gift shops or tourist stores, and make for a nice little reminder of your time in Hungary every time you grab your keys.

They come in different styles (some have bottle openers on them for a little bit more money) and a variety of colors, and don’t often cost more than a few U.S. Dollars (around 1200 Hungarian Forints).

Plus, they’re super small and not fragile so they’re very easy to travel with. Just be sure you don’t buy any that have mini knives or scissors attached, or else they may be confiscated by TSA when you go through airport security on your way home.

31. Coffee Mug

Coffee is a big deal in Hungary, even more so in Budapest where there are numerous coffee shops and cafés.

Why not bring home a coffee mug as a souvenir with a cute design on it, or even one that says “Budapest” in unique Hungarian lettering? These can also be found at gift shops and tourist stores, and make for a lovely addition to your morning routine at home. You could also buy one from your favorite cafe when you’re in Budapest!

Simply ask your waiter or waitress if you could buy the mug, and most of the time they’ll either just give it to you or sell it to you for just a couple of dollars.

I personally love adding coffee mugs to my ever-growing collection (I’ve been told it’s time to start limiting how many I bring home) because I find it to be the best way to start my day. Waking up to coffee in a mug that brings back so many happy memories is the perfect concoction for a great day.

32. Refridgerator Magnet

Yes, refrigerator magnets even made it on this list. That’s not to say there’s anything bad about them, but they are the quintessential souvenir you could buy from anywhere, not just Budapest.

When you’re in the Hungarian capital, you’ll probably find magnets featuring the Parliament building, St. Stephen’s Basilica, and maybe even the famous shoes on the Danube riverbank memorializing those who were killed by firing squad during WWII.

(If you’re heading to Hungary, be sure to check this memorial out in front of the Parliament building. It’s emotional, powerful, and definitely worth a visit).

These make for a unique addition to any fridge and are perfect for travelers trying to be budget-minded. If it sounds like I’m speaking directly to you, then I think you’ll find my other article on the 23+ Best Free Things To Do In Budapest: How to Visit Budapest on a Budget helpful for your trip!

33. Postcard

Okay, I know what you’re thinking. Postcards are kind of lame and they might even end up in the trash at some point. But hear me out.

In today’s digital age, a handwritten postcard is often rare and special to receive. Sending one to a parent, grandparent, loved one, or even a close friend can be a truly special gift that can make their whole day,

Plus, it gives you an excuse to sit down with a cup of coffee or a glass of wine and reflect on your time in Budapest. It’s also a great way to give friends and family back home a little taste of the Hungarian capital, whether it be through the postcard design or what you write on it.

You can find postcards at souvenir stores, markets, and even at certain cafes (I sometimes pick up postcards at bookstores) and don’t forget to buy stamps and send them off before you leave Budapest!

It’s such a fun way of connecting with your family and friends while you’re traveling abroad, and lets people know where you are if you are planning your travels as you go.

34. Hungarian Flag

Hungary is a proud nation with a beautiful flag. Bringing home a small one as a souvenir is not only functional if you have Hungarian heritage in your family or have a friend who lives there, but it’s also a great way to show your love and admiration for the country.

You can find flags of various sizes at gift shops and markets, often for just a few dollars. And if you’re lucky, you might even stumble upon a neat vintage flag that adds some character to your collection! Flags are also a fantastic collectible item that can showcase all of the countries of the world that you’ve been to.

But remember, Hungarian flags have a pretty specific way of being displayed. The red stripe should always be on top and the official civil flag does not have the coat of arms. If you do purchase a Hungarian flag with the coat of arms, it is meant to be displayed vertically.

Hungarian flags make for a unique addition to any collection, and can serve as a beautiful souvenir from Budapest.

35. Shot Glass – one of my personal favorite Budapest souvenirs

I’m going to preface this one with the fact that I actually own over 25 shot glasses from different countries that I’ve been to! When I first started traveling when I was in college, this was the perfect souvenir to bring home. It was affordable, light, small, and completely unique to whatever country I was in.

Plus, they’re functional! Whether it’s for a traditional Hungarian Palinka shot or a fun night out with friends, bringing home a shot glass from Budapest as a souvenir is always a good idea.

You can find them at markets and gift shops, often decorated with lovely designs or the Hungarian coat of arms.

If you recently returned from your trip and are wishing you picked one up, you can still buy one online! But, I’ll get more into this in the next section.

FAQ: Souvenirs from Budapest

Now, let’s answer some of your most popular questions regarding shopping in Budapest!

What is Budapest Best Known for?

Budapest is best known for its incredible architecture, hot springs, and rich history. It’s also a popular destination for spa treatments and thermal baths.

But, the city is also known for its delicious food (particularly Hungarian goulash), beautiful bridges, and unique ruins bars. Its iconic landmarks including Buda Castle and the Hungarian Parliament Building are what really struck my interest when I first arrived, however.

What Should I Bring Back from Budapest?

This really depends on your personal taste and interests.

Some popular souvenirs include Hungarian paprika, hand-painted ceramics, embroidered linens, traditional folk art, and Unicum. There’s so much to discover, however, so you’ll want to look around before you buy anything because something may just catch your eye!

Are Things Cheap in Budapest?

Overall, Budapest is a fairly affordable destination for travelers. However, like any city, there are areas and experiences that can be more expensive.

To save some money, try shopping at markets or local stores instead of tourist shops. And don’t forget to bargain! Vendors are often open to giving you a small discount if you haggle, so don’t be afraid to do this within reason.

As for accommodations, Budapest varies. A place like Rózsadomb in the 2nd district is very prestigious and hotels here may just break the bank. But, in the 8th district, you’ll find plenty of trending art galleries and chic cafes surrounded by budget-friendly hotels and apartment rentals!

Food is often very affordable, but be prepared to bring more money with you than you think you need. If you’re accustomed to using U.S. Dollars or Euros, then this is going to take some adjusting.

Meals in Budapest cost, on average, about 2,500-14,000 HUF (depending on which meal it is and if it’s a cheap or fancy restaurant with multiple courses). This may sound like a crazy amount of money, but that’s actually only $6-34 USD.

My husband and I made this mistake on our first visit to Budapest when we only walked around with about 10,000 HUF on us thinking that would be plenty for drinks at multiple bars, souvenirs, and dinner for two. Nope! Budapest is very cheap, but you’ll need more Forints on you than you think.

Budapest Souvenir Shop Online

If you didn’t have a chance to pick up souvenirs while in Budapest, or are looking for something specific, there are plenty of options for purchasing Hungarian souvenirs online!

Amazon has a remarkable network of specialty products, but if they don’t have what you’re looking for then you can often just research the item you want, and the maker will show in search results.

I have included a link to many of the souvenirs I provided above, so if you can’t find a souvenir when you’re physically in Budapest, you can still buy it online after you return. The same goes for Hungarian souvenirs, as well! Most items that you can buy in Hungary you can likely buy online.

Souvenir Shops in Budapest

When it comes to the best souvenir shops in Budapest, there are several that come to mind. if you’re looking for a ginormous variety and want to find almost everything I had talked about in this post in one place, then check out The Biggest Souvenir Shop-Market in Budapest.

There is also the Smile Souvenirs Budapest store on Wesselényi, Market1 Hungarian Souvenir and Gift Shop on Vigadó, and the Budapest Souvenir Shop on Váci.

These are what I call “typical souvenir shops” where you’ll find a lot of the same mass-produced products and few locally made souvenirs from Budapest itself.

If you’re looking for something a little more special, check out Tisza Shoes for some local Hungarian products! Going clothes shopping in Budapest is quite unique and you can often find both traditional and modern-day items to bring home.

If you want locally-made products, your best bet is to wander around the Central Market Hall for an hour or two (especially the upstairs section!)

Cheap Souvenir Shop Budapest

One of the best cheap souvenir shops in Budapest is Smile Souvenirs Budapest! They have exceptional reviews, great prices, and the staff are always friendly and willing to give a helping hand.

Cheap shopping in Budapest is extremely easy to do considering how affordable the country is anyway, but if you know where to go, you can save even more!

What to Buy in Budapest Central Market

The Central Market Hall is the perfect place to purchase many of the food souvenirs I mentioned, such as paprika, Hungarian salami, and Tokaj wine.

It’s also a great place for locally-made souvenirs including handmade jewelry, hand-embroidered towels, and small trinkets from local vendors. This is also where I had one of the best apple tarts in my entire life – the food here is a good enough reason to visit. It’s cheap and is often made right in front of you!

If you’re looking for something specific, like a Budapest T-shirt or coffee mug, then the Central Market Hall will often have those as well though they’re likely to be the same ones that get pulled out year after year without much of a dusting.

The Central Market Hall is more for picking up unique food items and souvenirs rather than typical tourist items.

Budapest Shopping Streets

Some of the best shopping streets in Budapest include Vaci Utca (this one is easily the most popular), Andrássy Avenue (known as the best shopping street in Budapest), and the mile-long Király Utca which is covered in shops, pubs, cafes, and restaurants and is locally known as the street that never sleeps!

Although, Váci Utca (Váci street) rivals the iconic Andrássy Avenue with its limitless storefronts and authentic Hungarian restaurants. Located in the center of the tourist district, this street is always busy.

These are all high-end shopping areas with designer stores, but they also have plenty of small locally-owned shops and boutiques for all of your shopping needs.

If you’re on a budget, check out the shopping area around the Astoria intersection and Deák Ferenc tér for more affordable options.

There is also the Vámház Krt which has some amazing shops and restaurants and the well-known Markthal (shopping mall) for those looking for a great deal.

Travel Tips for Shopping in Budapest

  • Don’t be afraid to haggle! It’s expected in many markets and small shops, so don’t feel bad about negotiating a lower price. Just be respectful and don’t throw out a marginally lower number.
  • Keep an eye out for locally-made products, as these make for the best souvenirs and support local businesses versus mass-manufactured products.
  • Don’t forget to check out Szimpla Kert’s Sunday Farmers Market for unique and locally-made products, as well as delicious food! It’s only open on Sundays from 9:00AM-2:00PM so be sure to get there early for the best spread.

Thing To Know Before Shopping in Hungary

  • Make sure to have Hungarian Forints on hand when shopping in Budapest, or anywhere in Hungary for that matter. Many places will accept credit cards or Euros, but they may not have the best exchange rate and you may end up paying more. It’s always good to have cash on hand just in case, especially for tipping at restaurants, etc.
  • Tipping! It is customary to tip about 10% of the total bill in Hungary when eating out. This doesn’t have much to do with souvenir shopping, but it’s still good to know.
  • There are going to be at least a dozen stores selling any product, so be sure to look around and window shop for the best price before you start haggling. It’s much easier to bring the least expensive store down by a percent or two, than the most expensive store by 5-10%.

What Jewelry is Hungary Known For?

Hungary is known for their hand-crafted gold and silver jewelry, often adorned with gemstones or traditional Hungarian motifs.

The most famous type of jewelry hails from the town of Késmárk, where intricate filigree designs are created using thin strands of gold or silver to form beautiful patterns.

Hungarian Snacks to Buy

Hungary is known for its delicious treats, including the classic street food called langos (deep-fried dough topped with garlic, sour cream and cheese), kurtoskalacs (a spiral-shaped pastry covered in sugar and cinnamon), and of course, the famous Hungarian paprika.

Other Hungarian snacks to try include kolbász (sausage with Hungarian paprika), pogácsa (delicious bread snacks), and Túró Rudi (a rod of chocolate filled with curd).

Now that you know what souvenirs from Budapest are authentic Hungarian products and suit your travel style and budget, it’s time to start packing!
