What To Keep In Glove Box

Opening a glove box compartment with must have items in a car

Nowadays, we practically live in our cars, don’t we? And our glove compartments are like that drawer at home in which we store our important items for easy access. We tend to put essential items like our car registration in our glove box, and sometimes we stuff it with too many nonessential items too.

What to keep in your car glove box? What to store and what not to store will vary based on what part of the country you live in, the weather conditions, and whether or not you are a parent.

Here is our list – in no particular order – of 20 items that, if they could fit, belong in the glove compartment.

1. Flashlight

When you consider what to keep in your car glove box, don’t forget a flashlight.

Imagine the sun has gone down and you find yourself stranded on a darkly lit, deserted back road. Your ability to get out of this situation depends on, at the very least, your ability to see. You should always carry a heavy duty flashlight that is waterproof in your glove box, and make sure you have extra batteries too.

Also, consider getting a flashlight pen, so you can also write down notes, and in the process, save space in your glove compartment.

2. Emergency escape tool

If you are in an accident and need to break a window to get out of your car, you will be glad you had a USB glass breaker in your glove compartment, which you can use to easily smash a window. Many of these tools also come with a razor sharp blade that you can use to cut your seat belt if it is jammed after an accident.

3. WD-40

Keep a small can of WD-40 in your glove box. This multi-purpose lubricant can be used for restoring foggy headlights, loosening and tightening wheel nuts, and getting rid of dead bugs, in addition to many other applications. WD-40 is something you keep in the glove compartment that you will use a lot.

4. Duct tape

When it comes to glove box items, duct tape should be near the top of your list. No matter what needs repairing on or inside your car, duct tape is up to the challenge. There’s also a heat resistant variety that can be used under the hood of your car.

5. Vehicle owner’s manual

What to keep in your car glove box? Your car’s owner manual is a no-brainer. When that mysterious red light keeps flashing on your dashboard, don’t get freaked out. Stay calm, grab your owner’s manual from your glove compartment, and diagnose the issue.

6. Microfiber cloths

If you want to keep your car clean, then make sure to keep a pack of microfiber cloths in your glove compartment. These highly absorbent cloths are ideally suited for dusting your dashboard, cleaning up spilled coffee, and cleaning your car’s exterior. If need be, you can even use them to wash your face. If you’re smart, it’s something you keep in the glove compartment

7. Car cell phone charger

If you find yourself in an emergency situation, having a cell phone with a dead battery doesn’t help much. A car charger can keep you online until help arrives. It’s a mainstay item for millennials, and the rest of us should follow their lead. Get a portable one with multiple USB ports.

8. Multi-purpose utility tool

Whether it’s a traditional Swiss Army knife, with knives, screwdrivers, and scissors, or a Leatherman tool, having a multi-purpose utility tool in your glove compartment is an absolute must and can greatly improve your chances of surviving an emergency situation. Also, it is compact and is the perfect size for your glove box survival kit.

9. Lug nut wrench and tire gauge

If you have to change a flat tire, you will need a lug nut wrench, which can be kept in your glove compartment, along with a jack and spare tire in the trunk. Your glove box items should also include a tire gauge for checking your air pressure and ensuring it is in accordance with your vehicle manufacturer’s recommendations. It should usually between 30 and 35 PSI, but consult your vehicle owner manual to be sure.

10. Tire inflater and sealer

Finally, a tire inflater and sealer, which you can use for an emergency repair, should also be stored in the glove compartment. Using a tire inflater and sealer to temporarily repair your tire will give you enough time to drive at low speed to a gas station or auto shop, where you can have your tire repaired or replaced.

11. Face Mask

If you need to protect yourself from smoke, fumes or other airborne contaminants, a simple face mask, which can be stored in your glove compartment, can prevent you from breathing in all the toxins in the air.

12. De-icer

For folks who live in a cold part of the country, a de-icer and ice scraper are must-have glove box items. Imagine leaving the office only to find that your car windshield has a layer of frozen ice over it. If you have a de-icer in your glove compartment, you will be in good hands. De-icers work by lowering the freezing point of water, and are even more effective when you apply them to your windshield before a storm hits.

There are over 40 de-icing products on the market, including chemical and non-chemical solutions alike.

13. Ice scraper

If you live in a cold climate, you should also keep an ice scraper in your glove box. They are small – typically 3” by 1” – and don’t take up much space. After applying the de-icer, use the ice scraper to gently scrape the ice off of your windshield.

14. Matches or lighter

Keeping a lighter or matches is always a good idea, especially if you find yourself in a cold environment and need to start a fire, or to light an emergency flare. Since it is small and does not take up much room, a lighter can be easily stored in your glove box, and should be a part of everyone’s glove box survival kit.

15. Emergency flares

Emergency flares should be an essential part of your glove box survival kit. Should your car break down on the side of the road, it is important that you are visible to other drivers. Also, in the case of being stranded or lost, lighting an emergency flare can help rescuers spot you. 15. Pepper spray

You might not think that pepper spray is something you keep in the glove compartment, but that’s a good place for it. If, worst case scenario, you are stranded along a road in an unfamiliar part of town, you will feel safer knowing you have pepper spray in your glove compartment and are able to fend off an attacker.

16. Glove

In the event of a serious car collision, you can expect a good amount of glass, debris, and extremely hot temperatures, including possibly a fire. Having a heavy-duty work glove in your glove compartment will protect your hands from cuts and burns.

17. First aid kit

A first aid kit can fit comfortably in your glove compartment and should be near the top of anyone’s list. In situations where you are not able to get medical attention, it can prevent infection, lend comfort, and even save a life. Among the items you should consider putting in the kit:

  • Heavy sterile gauze
  • Bee-sting relief cream
  • Antibacterial spray
  • Assorted bandages
  • Pain reliever
  • Allergy medication
  • Dental floss
  • Antibiotic cream
  • Anti-bacterial gel
  • Eye Wash
  • Lip balm
  • Extra required medication
  • Tweezers
  • Wipes

Hopefully, you won’t need to use your first aid kit very often, but knowing it’s a part of your glove box survival kit will give you peace of mind. Periodically check your kit to ensure the items are still fresh, and replace those that aren’t.

18. Map and compass

Navigation systems and map apps are awesome, but we must not rely on them exclusively, because they are not full proof — and what if you don’t have a charged phone? It might seem old-school but if you get lost, having a regular paper road map and a compass are all you really need to find your way back to your destination, and they fit neatly in your glove compartment.

19.Emergency contacts

Make sure your glove box items include your emergency contacts. In the case of a serious emergency, one in which you are temporarily incapacitated, rescue workers will look in your glove compartment for information on who to contact. Make sure you have a list with names of your closest friends and family. Title it “Emergency Contact List” and include their phone numbers.

20. Healthy snacks

Glove box items should also include snacks like dried fruit bars, protein bars, and dried nuts in case you find yourself isolated for a long period of time. They don’t take up much room and they will provide an infusion of energy that you may need to survive. Having water on hand is even more important, but there probably won’t be room in the glove compartment.

What is something you keep in the glove compartment? Thinking it through will pay off in the long run.

It could be something relatively minor (but frustrating), like spilling your coffee on your seat, and feeling relieved that you have microfiber cloths in your glove box to soak up the mess.

It could be something stressful like getting a flat tire, and knowing you’re able to cope because your tire inflater is in your glove compartment.

Or, it could be something more serious, like getting into a car accident, and feeling grateful that you had your escape tool – your USB glass breaker – in your glove box.

As you can see, deciding what to keep in your car glove box is of utmost importance. So please, don’t delay. Get your glove compartment in order today.
