What To Wear To A Kenny Chesney Concert

I’m a rock ‘n’ roll kind of guy. I graduated from high school in the early ’80s and spent a good portion of that decade at rock concerts. I saw all of the big names, and have the perpetually ringing ears to prove it.

Then I moved to Jacksonville and started reviewing concerts. As you might expect, a good chunk of those have been country shows – Garth Brooks, Tim McGraw, George Strait, Reba McEntire, Dolly Parton, Brad Paisley, Kenny Chesney, Luke Bryan, Jason Aldean, Miranda Lambert, Shania Twain, the Zac Brown Band, Lady Antebellum, Carrie Underwood, even Taylor Swift, back when she was still considered country.

So here’s my How to Attend a Country Concert Guide.

DRESS THE PART

You can wear jeans and a T-shirt to a rock show, but part of the fun of a country concert is the people watching, and you want to stand out. Short skirts and cowboy boots are ubiquitous when the weather is warmer, but jeans and boots will do in the winter. Just don’t forget the boots. Guys can wear any shirt they want, as long as it’s tight. Half of the crowd will be wearing hats – either genuine Stetsons or straw hats with the front of the brim turned down. Guys can also get away with a ball cap, but the more beat up, the better. When the music starts, take off the hat so the folks behind you can see.

BE PUNCTUAL

Rock bands come on when they darned well feel like it, but if the ticket for a country show says it starts at 7, the first opening act will step on stage at precisely 7. You don’t want to miss the opening acts, either – country has a way of developing its stars that’s sort of akin to minor league baseball. This year’s opening act is next year’s headliner.

SCOPE OUT THE ARENA

If there are weird bags hanging from the ceiling, it probably means a confetti blizzard is coming at some point. If there are odd tracks over the stage, expect to see a performer fly around the stage before the night is over. If there are odd seams in the stage, it probably means something is going to rise up when you least expect it. And those cylinders on the corner of the stage are probably confetti cannons or for “pyro” explosions.

WATCH THE STAGE, NOT THE SCREENS

Nearly all big tours these days come with big video screens. But you didn’t pay all that money to watch the show on TV, did you? Watch the actual performers and just use the screens to see details and highlights. Oh, and put away your cellphone – it’s awfully annoying to the people behind you and the video you shoot is going to be shaky and the sound will be all blown out anyway. Go on YouTube the next day and you can watch someone else’s shaky video with blown-out sound.

KNOW THE WORDS

Country shows often turn into big sing-along sessions. (But, for the sake of your fellow concert-goers, don’t sing too loud; they didn’t pay all that money to listen to you.)

DON’T FORGET YOUR EARPLUGS

Country shows used to be relatively sedate, but that’s not the case any longer. They can get very loud, even between acts.

EXPECT TO ROCK A LITTLE

Country stars love their rock ‘n’ roll, so don’t be surprised to see one of them play some old Rolling Stones or Led Zeppelin or Queen song.
