He died and was reborn as a cursed spirit with two faces and four arms, resembling a human. After he was finally defeated, it was decided to split his soul into 20 fingers and seal it in the form of cursed artifacts because the sorcerers of this era were unable to exorcise him. We don’t have any additional information, but these are the facts that we are aware of regarding this story. For decades, sorcerers have collected and stored these cursed artifacts, which are unbreakable, with the hope that one day they will be destroyed.
As for the present, of course, the story of Sukuna’s resurrection started with Itadori’s schoolmates accidentally stumbling upon one of his fingers and Yuji consuming it so he could save them from the curses that had started to attack them. During the Shibuya Incident, Mimiko and Nanako fed Yuji an additional finger, but Jogo soon arrived and revealed that he had a total of 10 of them in his possession. He then fed them to Yuji, which brought the total to 15 at the time. Yuji then lost control, and while Mimiko and Nanako said that they knew of the location of an extra finger, they were killed by Sukuna before revealing it because he found them annoying.
Also, in the meantime, Sukuna’s loyal servant, Uraume, managed to collect four additional fingers, so by the time Sukuna faced Gojo – he had already eaten 19 of his 20 fingers. The location of the final finger remains a secret, still, as Gojo hid it somewhere in order to stall Yuji’s eventual execution. As far as things stand now, no one knows where the final finger is located, and we’ll have to wait and see if Akutami reveals it or not.
