How To Fill Out A Missouri Car Title When Selling

In order to properly complete a Missouri Certificate of Title upon sale of a vehicle, follow these instructions:

Seller / Registered Owner Title Transfer

IMPORTANT NOTE: When selling to an individual who resides in St. Louis City, St Louis County, St. Charles County, Jefferson County, or Franklin County you must provide to the buyer an EMISSIONS INSPECTION (Less than 60 days old). In ALL counties, the seller must provide a SAFETY INSPECTION CERTIFICATE (less than 60 days old)

  • If there are any liens shown on the front of the title you will need to obtain a release from the lienholder. Use form: https://dor.mo.gov/forms/4809.pdf . If the form is not used, then a notarized statement on lienholder’s letterhead stating the lien is released can be used.
  • On the back of the title you will fill out the upper part within the block called ASSIGNMENT.
  • Print the purchaser’s name(s) and complete address on the two lines provided.
  • Enter the SALE PRICE
  • Enter DATE OF SALE
  • Enter MODEL (Ford, Chev, etc)
  • Fill in the odometer reading in the space provided (Not required if vehicle is ten or more years old). Enter your mileage EXACTLY AS IT APPEARS ON YOUR ODOMETER. DO NOT INCLUDE “TENTHS”. If the odometer does not reflect the actual miles on the car, check the box that says “MILEAGE READING IS NOT ACTUAL (warning-odometer discrepancy)”.
  • Print purchaser name(s) in the block provided. One purchaser is required to SIGN.
  • Next to the buyer signature the seller must print name(s) and sign on the lines as provided. MAKE SURE TO PRINT YOUR NAME (OR NAMES) EXACTLY as appears on the front of the title next to “OWNER” (DON’T USE SHORT NAMES OR NICKNAMES!). ALL sellers on the face of the title are required to sign.
  • Submit Notice of Sale within 30 days. Two-part titles issued after February 2006 have a tear-off part for this. For earlier titles get the form at tp://dor.mo.gov/forms/5049.pdf . Make a copy for yourself.
  • Keep your license plates.
