What Does It Mean When Tire Pressure Light Is Blinking

TPMS Lights

Your car’s tire pressure monitoring system or TPMS is there to warn you when the air pressure in your tires is low, and it will turn on if one or more of your tires is underinflated. Seeing the TPMS light on your dashboard turn on and stay on is cause for alarm, you might not know what it means when the light starts flashing. Let’s take a look at what that means and what you should do if it starts happening to your vehicle.

What is the TPMS?

The TPMS or tire pressure monitoring system monitors the air pressure in your tires. Tires pressure can change over time due to temperature changes, air leaks, or even just regular wear and tear. Low tire pressure can result in damage to your tires, poor gas mileage, and unsafe driving conditions. When your tire pressure falls below where it should be, your TPMS light will turn on and stay on. This is an indicator that you should check your tires’ pressure and inflate them to where they should be or buy all new tires.

What Does it Mean When the TPMS Light is Flashing?

Tire pressure can fluctuate due to temperature changes and other factors. While this is normal, those fluctuations can cause the pressure to fall low enough to alert your TPMS momentarily. When this happens, you might notice your TPMS warning light to turn on and off. This isn’t as dire as when the light turns on and stays on, but it never hurts to check your tires’ pressure when you get the chance.

If your TPMS light flashes for 60 to 90 seconds when you start your car and stays on, it means that there is something wrong with the TPMS itself. Since you may need this system to warn you if your tires are underinflated, head to a dealership or mechanic to have the system serviced.
