When Are Scorpions Most Active

There have been 9 species of scorpions identified to be inhabiting Utah.

Scorpions are arachnids, close relatives of ticks, mites and spiders. They are easily recognized by their characteristic shape. Scorpions prefer dry habitats but occur throughout Utah. They can be a nuisance when they interact with humans because they will sting when disturbed.

Even though they are nocturnal, scorpion encounters are rising with the temperatures. Learn more about scorpions in Utah here.

Considering that scorpions are nocturnal and active during the night time you should not encounter them in your day to day activities. In recent years each summer seems to be increasingly warm as temperatures are slightly climbing. Despite living in the desert and spending time underneath rocks and other hiding places, scorpions, like us, do not enjoy these scorching temperatures. Scorpion encounters are rising as these scorpions in Utah are looking for areas to cool off and escape the heat. Our homes are a perfect place for them to escape to, there are countless places for them to hide and safely cool down.

Here are some of the best ways to protect your home from scorpions:

  • -Remove all trash, logs, boards, stones, bricks and other objects from around the structure.
  • -Keep grass closely mowed near the structure. Prune bushes and overhanging tree branches away from the structure. Tree branches can give scorpions a path to the roof.
  • -Store garbage containers in a frame that keeps them above ground level.
  • -Never bring firewood inside the structure unless it is placed directly on the fire.
  • -Install weather-stripping around loose-fit- ting doors and windows.
  • -Plug weep holes in stone or brick veneer structures with steel wool, copper mesh, pieces of nylon scouring pad, or small squares of screen wire. (Steel wool will rust when wet, so it should be used only on dark-colored facades.)
  • -Use sealant around roof eaves, pipes, and any other cracks into the structure.
  • -Keep window screens in good repair. Make sure they fit tightly in the window frame.

The stings from Utah scorpions produce only moderate reactions in most people because the poison has little effect on the nervous system. Severity of the sting is dependent upon the individual scorpion and the person’s reaction to the venom. A person who is stung by a scorpion should be watched closely for adverse reactions. As with any arthropod venom, allergic reactions are possible. An ice pack applied to the affected area will relieve some pain. If swelling and/or pain persists or if breathing difficulties occur, immediate medical attention is necessary.

The most effective way to keep your home free of these potentially dangerous scorpions is to call professional pest control experts at Beeline Pest Control and our experienced technicians can safely remove any scorpions within your home and repel them from coming back.
