Patients are concerned about possible risks of infection, filler movement, or affecting the final results with kissing.

“Air kissing” can be done right away. Air kissing, common in many cultures, doesn’t damage the filler. Light kissing, such as a peck on the cheek or kissing your child’s forehead, can also be performed immediately. Simple lip movement such as puckering and smiling is OK early too. Waiting at least 1-2 days before any heavier kissing is generally advised by plastic surgeons and dermatologists, as the filler settles and integrates with your lip tissue.
The lips may be swollen or sore initially, so some women may not be in the mood to kiss or be afraid of kissing. There isn’t any known evidence that routine kissing will cause more rapid breakdown of the product or move the filler. However, very heavy manipulation of the lips isn’t a great idea either soon after filler injections.

A large majority of Washington DC plastic surgery or dermatology offices use facial fillers made with hyaluronic acid (HA) for the lips. All of these HA fillers are soft, clear gels that integrate with lip tissue over time. Examples of FDA-approved HA fillers in the US include Restylane®, Juvederm®, and Belotero®. The same general guidelines apply to all of these lip injection fillers, ie. light kissing OK immediately, while heavier kissing should wait at least a couple days.
Can you feel the filler after lip injection?
The lips may feel a little firm or strange to the touch for the first couple hours or days after treatment. Sometimes, one may feel a slight irregularity or nodule in some spots. These issues typically resolve with time. Once the swelling has resolved, lips after filler injections generally don’t feel any different than they did before, not even when you’re kissing. Lips are still soft and natural. The person you are kissing won’t know the difference either.
