The Brazilian butt lift (BBL) is unquestionably one of the most in-demand cosmetic body contouring procedures today, and the trend doesn’t seem to be going anywhere but up. Countless women (and men) turn to BBL surgery each year to achieve a fuller, more desirable butt shape that can be virtually impossible to sculpt with diet and exercise alone. With a newly enhanced bum, it is understandable that patients are anxious to upgrade their wardrobes and start showing off their new look ASAP, but there are some important styles of clothing and certain behaviors that should be avoided following BBL surgery – like wearing jeans. Here, Magnolia Plastic Surgery and MedSpa owner and New Orleans, LA plastic surgeon Dr. Heath Charvet explains why you may need to wait to wear jeans after a BBL and for how long.
How does a BBL work?
BBL surgery is performed as an outpatient procedure using general anesthesia. The first step in a BBL fat transfer is to harvest viable fat from another area of the patient’s body, such as the abdomen or flanks, via liposuction. The fat is then prepared using specialized processes, making it suitable for a transfer to the buttocks. Finally, Dr. Charvet uses skill, precision, and an aesthetic eye to strategically inject the fat into the buttocks, creating a smooth, even, and proportionate shape.

Following BBL surgery, patients will need to wear compressive garments in the areas where liposuction was performed in order to discourage swelling and promote proper healing. It is critical to avoid compression or pressure on the buttocks, however, as this can damage the newly transferred fat cells and compromise the patient’s final outcome. Patients will need to sleep on their front and avoid sitting, driving, and otherwise placing pressure on the buttocks after BBL surgery. When cleared to do so, patients may begin using a modified sitting position with the help of a donut pillow or another device. Full recovery after BBL surgery usually takes about 4 – 6 weeks, with the final effects of the procedure becoming visible after about 3 – 6 months as the residual swelling subsides.
When can I wear jeans after a BBL?
Tight clothing, such as leggings or jeans, should be avoided for about 6 – 8 weeks after BBL surgery or until cleared by Dr. Charvet. Wearing tight jeans too soon after BBL can destroy the delicate fat cells that were transferred to the buttocks, meaning patients will not achieve their desired volume or shape. Instead, patients should stick to comfortable, loose-fitting clothing during BBL recovery. Additional tips for a smooth and successful recovery after BBL surgery include:
- Eat a healthy diet
- Drink plenty of water
- Rest
- Do not engage in strenuous exercise or activity
- Practice light stretching, walking, and massaging the buttocks as directed
- Avoid putting pressure on the buttocks
- Do not sit or lie on the buttocks
- Do not wear jeans or tight clothing
