The Last of Us has introduced us to many villains who are out to get Joel and Ellie, but the show’s 8th episode showed us their biggest fight for survival yet as they faced David and his group of followers. As Joel continued to recover from his injuries, Ellie tried to lead them away and we soon find out the real reason why they are out to get them: revenge. Honestly, we don’t blame you for wondering this. It’s actually been a while since we’ve seen him and yes, you have actually met him before. But we didn’t know his name back then.
He’s actually the guy that Joel kills when he and Ellie reached the university in order to get Ellie to the Fireflies. Unfortunately for them, they already left and they were spotted by a group of hunters who were looking for them. Ellie tries to warn Joel about one of the them who was about to attack him—who we later discover is actually Alec—and Joel ends up killing him in the process, but not before he is stabbed as well. If you need more of a refresher, this actually all happened in episode 6.
We have since learned that he was a part of David’s group of followers. We’re still not sure why exactly they decided to attack Joel and Ellie back in the Fireflies lab, but considering that we later find out that David’s group were actually cannibals, well…you can probably guess why…

The first mostly has to do with just getting back at him for killing Alec, who seemed to be a beloved member of the group. Even his own daughter asked David to kill Joel and Ellie to get back at them. So it was likely that David had approved the search in order to regain control and trust of the group again, especially as they tried to survive the harsh winter.
Meanwhile, it could’ve also been for food purposes as David and his group were about to run out and were figuring out how they were going to continue to survive. As David later pointed out to Ellie, some people in his group already knew that they were cannibals, so it’s possible that they were also hunting them down for food.
