The last time the Yankees won the World Series was in 2009 when they beat the Phillies. They beat the Philadelphia Phillies 4-2 and won their 27th World Series title on November 4, 2009. Hideki Matsui of the Yankees won the World Series Most Valuable Player.
In Game 1, the Phillies won because Cliff Lee pitched a complete game and only let one unearned run score. Chase Utley hit two home runs. In Game 2, Mark Teixeira and Hideki Matsui each hit a solo home run, which helped the Yankees win by a score of 3-1. After rain delayed the start of Game 3, the offense picked up, and the Yankees won with a total of 13 runs and six home runs. After Johnny Damon made a smart base-running play in the ninth inning, the Yankees scored the three runs that won the game. The Phillies didn’t lose the series because they won Game 5. Utley’s second two-home run game of the series helped them win.

With a win in Game 6, the Yankees won the World Series. In that game, Matsui hit his third home run of the series. He was named the series’ Most Valuable Player (MVP), making him the first player born in Japan to win the award and the first full-time designated hitter to do so. Matsui was the most valuable player of the series, even though he only started the three games that were played at Yankee Stadium. This is because there is no designated hitter position in NL ballparks.
During this World Series, many records were tied, extended, or broken, including the Yankees’ 27 team championships, Andy Pettitte’s 18 career postseason wins, Mariano Rivera‘s 11 career World Series saves, Chase Utley’s five home runs in a World Series, Ryan Howard’s 13 strikeouts in a World Series, and the most runs batted in in a single World Series game (Matsui with six).

Yogi Berra, a former Yankees catcher, and World War II veteran, was led to the mound by Michelle Obama and Jill Biden. A veteran of the Iraq War threw the ceremonial first pitch. Lee finished the game by giving up six hits and one unearned run. He struck out ten batters and didn’t walk any of the batters he faced.
Game 2 at Yankee Stadium
Pedro Martnez had not played in a postseason game against the Yankees since the 2004 American League Championship Series when he was on the Boston Red Sox and a longtime rival of the Yankees. Martnez left the game after Jerry Hairston Jr. and Melky Cabrera each got a hit to start the seventh inning. Mark Teixeira’s home run in the fourth inning tied the game, and Hideki Matsui’s home run in the sixth inning broke the tie. Rivera threw 39 pitches and got six outs, giving him his 38th save in the postseason and 10th in the World Series.
Game 3 at Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia
The Phillies got on the board first with a home run by Jayson Werth. In the bottom of the second inning, a bases-loaded walk and a sacrifice fly made the score 3-0. In the top of the fourth inning, after Mark Teixeira walked, Alex Rodriguez hit a deep ball down the right-field line. At first, it was thought to be a double, so Teixeira stayed at third base. MLB instant replay was used to look at the play. It showed that the ball had hit a camera on top of the wall, so the ball was called a two-run home run. This was Rodriguez’s first hit in the World Series. Two hits were made on Rodriguez. Rivera put an end to the game by getting the last two outs with just five pitches.
Game 4 at Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia
Alex Rodriguez was hit by a pitch, and Jeter scored. In the bottom of the fourth, the Phillies tied the game. When Teixeira was at bat, Damon stole second and third on the same play. This was possible because the defense moved away from Teixeira, leaving the base open. A number of news sources called this a “mad dash.” Mariano Rivera came in to save the game for the Yankees in the bottom of the ninth. He did this on eight pitches, which was his second save of the series.

In the fourth inning, David Robertson kept the Phillies from scoring for the second time. Chase Utley’s fifth home run of the World Series tied Reggie Jackson’s record for most home runs in a World Series. Then, Phil Coke struck out Howard. This was Howard’s 12th strikeout of the series, which tied Willie Wilson’s record for most strikeouts in a World Series.
Game 6 at Yankee Stadium
The Yankees got on the board first when Alex Rodriguez walked to start the bottom of the second inning. Then, Hideki Matsui hit a two-run home run as the Yankees’ designated hitter. In the top of the third, Carlos Ruiz hit a triple for the Phillies, and Jimmy Rollins hit a sacrifice fly to score him. Matsui hit a single with the bases full in the bottom of the third, scoring Derek Jeter and Johnny Damon. This gave the Yankees a bigger lead. The game ended with a score of 7-3, giving the Yankees the World Series.
