When Do The New Cfp Rankings Come Out

It’s almost time.

Only a week remains until we find out what four teams advance to the College Football Playoffs. There’s still plenty of football to go around until then, but as usual, Rivalry Week gave plenty of insight into the top contenders.

No. 2 Ohio State lost its third straight to No. 3 Michigan. The Buckeyes will not compete for a Big Ten title, likely knocking them out of contention. Seven of the other Top 10 teams will compete for their own conference championship.

The Wolverines, along with No. 1 Georgia, have likely already done enough to earn CFP spots. Even if the Bulldogs lose to No. 8 Alabama in the SEC title game, their 12-1 record and back-to-back national championships would speak volumes.

It’ll all come down to the Pac-12 and ACC. If No. 5 Florida State can claim the ACC Championship against Louisville to stay undefeated, the Seminoles will be be hard to ignore even without injured star QB Jordan Travis. That leaves the last semifinal spot to the winner of the rematch between No. 4 Washington and No. 6 Oregon. Texas at No. 7 will be just on the edge, but even winning its final Big 12 game, the conference championship against Oklahoma State, may not be enough for the CFP. The Longhorns have the edge over the Tide, at least.

Projected CFP rankings: Who are the top four teams in college football?

1. Georgia (12-0, 8-0 SEC)2. Michigan (12-0, 9-0 Big Ten)3. Washington (12-0, 9-0 Pac-12) 4. Florida State (12-0, 8-0 ACC)

Next two out:

5. Oregon (11-1, 8-1 Pac-12)6. Texas (11-1, 8-1 Big 12)

Each team in the top four is competing in its respective conference championship. If they win and stay undefeated, it’s almost guaranteed they will take the playoff spots.

After back-to-back CFP appearances, Georgia and Michigan will likely play in the semifinals regardless of what happens in their conference title games. The Wolverines are too physical to be stopped by Iowa, and the Bulldogs’ two national titles cannot be ignored even if Alabama finds a way to stop them.

Washington has the biggest stakes in its Pac-12 finale. The Huskies are taking on Oregon for the second time this season, having been the only team to best the Ducks this season but only by a missed field goal. If Oregon and Dan Lanning can find a way to win the Pac-12 Championship and avenge their only loss, it’s likely they will take over Washington’s four spot and head to the playoffs.

The Longhorns need a little held to get into the CFP. They will play for their final Big 12 Championship, but even winning that may not be enough. The best chance they have at national-title contention will be if the Seminoles cannot capture an ACC trophy without injured star QB Jordan Travis. Even if that happens, Texas’ chances are a long shot.

All the top four need to do is what they’ve done all season: win. But if they don’t, and we’re left with a handful of one-loss teams, the CFP committee will have some tough choices to make.
