The epic, twisting and complex saga that is “Vampire Diaries” will resume with season seven on Thursday at 8 p.m.
For everyone who didn’t have time to prep for the CW premiere by rewatching all of season six, here’s a quick refresher course on where the main characters ended the season.

Elena Gilbert
It’ll be interesting to see how the show carries on without her; she’s not only a popular (and really hot) character, but she’s also one-third of the Damon-Stefan-Elena love triangle.

In the season seven trailer, there’s some girl-on-girl action involving Caroline and Bonnie, so maybe that will at least make up for the absence of Elena’s hotness.
In any case, Elena ends the season in a magically-induced coma — which she could stay in for the next 60 or so years. Kai has linked her life to Bonnie’s so that only one of them can be alive and conscious at a time.
Although we know that Nina Dobrov has left the show, her character isn’t actually dead, so it seems the show’s creators have left open the possibility of a return someday. Or maybe that’s just wishful thinking.

Caroline Forbes
The blond, control-freak vampire spent much of season six as a psycho killer because she turned off her humanity after her mother died of cancer. By the end of the season, though, she got her humanity back just in time to watch the final episode’s bloodbath.
There’s a definite possibility that something more could develop between Stefan and Caroline in the future, but by the end of the season they’ve just left it that he’s willing to wait till she’s ready.
Bonnie Bennett
In season six, Bonnie (Kat Graham) spent around four months in a 1994 prison world, but she came back stronger and angrier — and oddly willing to be friendly to Damon.
She barely makes it through season six alive, but in the last episode Damon saves her life even though it means that Elena will have to spend decades more in a magical coma while Bonnie lives out the rest of her days.
Damon Salvatore
It will be interesting to see where Damon (Ian Somerhalder) goes as a character this season in the absence of his true love.
Of course, as per a promo teaser, one place we know that it will go is to shots of a naked Salvatore chucking a towel at the formerly vampiric Alaric (Matt Davis). Yay for naked vampires!

Stefan Salvatore
Stefan (Paul Wesley) doesn’t end the season in a much better place than Damon. They’re both alive — or still undead — but they’ve also both lost a lot of key people in their lives. At least the brooding younger Salvatore may have another love prospect on the horizon.
Also, he — like the rest of Mystic Falls — may have a problem on his hands, thanks to the return of his ripper mother Lily Salvatore (Annie Wersching).
Kai Parker
The evil, once magic-less witch seems dead by the season’s end — although in supernatural shows it’s usually hard to say when someone’s really dead for good.
In the finale, Damon chopped off Kai’s head, so hopefully he won’t make a return.
Before (hopefully) leaving the show, Kai (Chris Wood) wreaked a fair amount of havoc. Aside from linking Bonnie to Elena, Kai helped ripper Lily and her siphoner witch/vampire hybrid heretics escape the 1903 prison world.
Oh, and he killed the entire Gemini coven when he — as the Gemini leader — killed himself, only to come back as a vampire and then end up decapitated by the older Salvatore brother.
