Call the Midwife has ensured that fans will now be desperately awaiting season 14, after shattering hearts when it completely derailed Trixie (Helen George) and Matthew’s (Olly Rix) perfect love story throughout season 13.
The finale (which aired on Sunday, March 3 – and there’s spoilers ahead if you’ve not caught up yet) went some way to have us believe that the two would reconcile and finally get their happy ending.

But Trixie’s decision to head to New York has left viewers with a separate set of fears.
Will the newlyweds be returning to Poplar, or will the Aylwards’ big-apple adventure prove to be permanent? And is Olly Rix leaving Call the Midwife for good?
Here’s everything we know about season 14 of Call the Midwife.
While no dates have been confirmed just yet, Call the Midwife season 14 will almost certainly air from January 2025 (in keeping with the pattern of previous seasons).
Barring any big schedule shake-ups, it should follow a little while after the next Call the Midwife Christmas special (as previously confirmed by the BBC) which will air in December 2024.
Thankfully it is just a matter of when, not if, the show will be returning, as Call the Midwife seasons 14 and 15 were confirmed (taking it through to 2026 at least) back in February 2023. So while fans may be agonising over the future of Matthew and Trixie, the show’s future is at least on solid ground.
Creator Heidi Thomas previously revealed she was “overjoyed” that the show had been green-lit until 2026.
“We are a family behind the scenes, on the screen, and in front of the telly, and I’m thrilled that we’re all heading into the 1970s together,” Thomas said.

The show’s executive producer, Dame Pippa Harris, also described the confirmation of the show’s renewal as a “tremendous achievement”, before adding: “it’s a testament to the passion and dedication of our cast and crew, of whom I’m very proud”.
This is a question that will now be burning on many fans’ lips, given the whole Matthew/Trixie debacle. With that in mind, let’s just address the Big Apple in the room.
Fans of the couple will no doubt have a lot of feelings about the fact that Matthew jetted off to New York in the penultimate episode without Trixie, only for her to decide to follow him in the finale.
While it has been reported that Rix might not be returning to Call the Midwife, it has always been made clear that George’s Trixie would remain.
Her recent decision to join Matthew does raise more than a few eyebrows, but Digital Spy understands Helen George will not be leaving Call the Midwife as season 13 ends.
Until the BBC announces anything to the contrary, we are holding to that piece of news with a firm grasp.
As for Rix, we will simply have to wait until season 14 to find out whether he’ll be making an appearance (unless anything is revealed to us before then).
Thankfully the fate of Call the Midwife’s other main-stay characters doesn’t seem so precarious, so we’d expect the following to return for the next season:
• Judy Parfitt as Sister Monica Joan• Jenny Agutter as Sister Julienne• Rebecca Gethings as Sister Veronica• Linda Bassett as nurse Phyllis Crane• Laura Main as Shelagh Turner• Stephen McGann as Dr Patrick Turner• Max Macmillan as Timothy Turner• Megan Cusack as nurse Nancy Corrigan • Renee Bailey as nurse Joyce Highland (or should we say Claudine Warren?)• Natalie Quarry as nurse Rosalind Clifford • Zephryn Taitte as Cyril Robinson• Georgie Glen as Miss Higgins• Cliff Parisi as Fred Buckle• Annabelle Apsion as Violet Buckle• Daniel Laurie as Reggie Jackson• Christopher Harper as Geoffrey Franklin
There’s been no mention of Leonie Elliott’s Lucille returning this season but, given that there hasn’t been any closure between her and Cyril, she could come back just to put a definitive end to their marriage.
While the baby drama and social issues will no doubt continue to heat up as we step into the ’70s, the fan focus will no doubt be on what will happen to Trixie and Matthew.

As previously mentioned, Trixie will likely return to Poplar, but what is to come of her marriage to Matthew?
If Rix doesn’t return, it doesn’t necessarily mean the end for the Aylwards. He could remain in New York to set up his new business, perhaps?
At the end of season 13, Matthew made it clear to Trixie that in a few months’ time he would be able to manage the business remotely. This means that Rix’s character’s apparent exit could be temporary – only time will tell.
Aside from the Aylward drama, the storyline for season 14 is tightly under wraps. In fact, even the cast aren’t sure where the ’70s will take their characters.
“We haven’t heard any, but we never know anything,” Megan Cusack told Radio Times of season 14.
This was a sentiment that was echoed by George, who added: “We know nothing, yeah. We’ll wait and see but we’ve got one more season which is amazing.”
Creator Heidi Thomas did, however, share that she was keen to dig into the 70s experience of women and the working class.
“The order of nuns on whom the Nonnatus nuns are based stay in the East End until 1976, but I think, more importantly than that single historic fact, is that of women’s lives and the lives of the working classes as well…
“There are so many stories to tell, medically, socially, even emotionally, and I think we could keep on going,” she told the publication.
There is no trailer for Call the Midwife season 14 just yet, which is no massive surprise given that season 13 has just ended.
There is also the 2024 Christmas special to look forward to, before we even get close to a first look at the new season. Either way, we’ll update you as soon as there’s news. All episodes of Call the Midwife are available to watch on BBC iPlayer.
