Hunters in Ohio counted 210,977 deer during hunting season last year, the first time the count has surpassed 200,000 since 2012. The state is expected to see a 5-to-10 percent increase during the 2023-2024 season.

Should the increase occur, wildlife managers may implement several population control measures, such as issuing nuisance permits to landowners, exploding the array of legal hunting equipment, and selling discounted antlerless permits.

Damage to crops, landscapes and native plants, deer-vehicle accidents, and the spread of Lyme disease may increase unless deer numbers can be controlled, per the Dispatch.
