Legal Furbearer Hunting Arms & Gear

  • Centerfire or rimfire guns
  • Muzzle-loading rifles or handguns
  • Shotguns (max 10 gauge, plugged for max 3 shells; no shot size limit, shoulder-fired only)
  • Shotshells with single projectiles (slugs) during daylight only
  • Bows and crossbows
  • Air guns (.22 caliber pellets or larger)
  • Hand/mouth operated or electronic calls/attracting devices
  • Falconry

Legal Trapping Methods

  • Use of lights from boats or vehicles for trap checks allowed.
  • Setting traps in commonly used trails or paths is prohibited.
  • No restrictions on the size/type of water set traps, except:
    • Body-gripping traps >20 inches wide must be fully submerged.
  • Permitted equipment for dry land sets (trap doesn’t touch water):
    • Deadfall
    • Wire cage or box trap
    • Foothold traps (max jaw spread of 6 inches perpendicular to the hinges)
    • On private land, body-gripping traps (max jaw spread of 7½ inches parallel to the trigger)
    • On WMAs and outdoor recreation areas, body-gripping traps (max jaw spread of 5¼ inches)
    • Snare (wire, cable, or string with a knot, loop, or closing device, spring-assisted or not; but spring assistance must not be for applying tension to the closing device)
  • Dry land sets spacing requirements:
    • Not closer than 10 feet apart on WMAs and outdoor recreation areas.
    • On private land, same spacing unless written permission is obtained for up to three traps within 10 feet.
    • Spacing rule doesn’t apply to wire cage/box traps or properties ≤5 acres.
  • Special trapping restrictions:
    • Traps must have a metal tag with the trapper’s name and address or a unique ID number issued by the department plus the 1-800-25-ALERT number.
    • Untagged traps are subject to immediate confiscation by the department without a court order.
    • Traps must be checked and cleared of animals every 24 hours.
    • Coyote trapping is allowed only during furbearer seasons.
    • Trappers must harvest captured furbearers unless holding a captive wildlife permit from Kentucky Fish and Wildlife.
    • Spotted skunks are protected all year; incidental captures should be reported to Kentucky Fish and Wildlife.
    • Obstructing or disrupting lawful wildlife trapping is illegal.
