Billy the Kid is one of the most famous outlaws of the Old West, so it’s little surprise that the first season of MGM+‘s dramatic retelling of his life and demise was something of a hit. It should likewise not shock that it was greenlit for a second season, which debuted on October 15, 2023, with “The Road to Hell”. As of the action-packed mid-season finale, the show is on hiatus, and Billy the Kid Season 2 Episode 5 will return to MGM+ sometime in 2024, though the official release date is as-yet unconfirmed.
In the latest episode, two major shootouts resulted in the death of William Brady and several of Jesse Evans’ Gang, but the Regulators didn’t come out unscathed either. The last-minute reintroduction of Pat Garrett as Brady’s Ring-approved successor will be a point of immediate concern in Episode 5 and indeed the remainder of the second season.

When will Billy the Kid Season 2 Episode 5 be on MGM+?
At the time of writing, there is no official release date for Billy the Kid Season 2 Episode 5.
MGM+ had always intended to release the second season in two parts, emulating other streaming platforms that have utilized the same strategy to prolong their big shows recently, since production was put on hold following the still-ongoing SAG-AFTRA strike. The episodes are all written, but the outcome of the strikes will determine when production on the final four episodes can be completed.

While we know the season will resume at some point in 2024, we don’t know exactly when, and the exact date will likely be determined by the outcome of the strikes.
What happened in the previous episode?
In the meantime, here’s where we’re up to as of Episode 4:
- Billy and the Regulators are wanted for Billy’s murder of Frank Baker and William Morton in Episode 3. Murphy plans to have McSween arrested for this as an accessory to murder, leading to him being publicly hanged.
- The House plans to arrest McSween as soon as he arrives in Lincoln, and a party is thrown on Main Street to cover the event and make it difficult for Billy to intervene. He does, though, and William Brady is shot dead by the Regulators.
- Tom O’Folliard is shot and almost dies, though he’s tended to by the McSweens after the gunfight. He remains hidden under their floorboards with supplies while Billy and the others ride out for another shootout with the Jesse Evans Gang at Blazer’s Mill.
- Jesse has a clean shot on Billy but doesn’t take it, allowing him to escape with Charlie Bowdre.
- Pat Garrett, who eventually killed Billy the Kid in real life, is appointed by Thomas Catron as the new Lincoln County Sheriff.
Where to watch Billy the Kid Season 2 online
As stated above, Billy the Kid Season 2 is exclusive to MGM+ in the U.S. and the service is available with a subscription.
At the time of writing, we don’t have any concrete information on how to stream Billy the Kid outside of the U.S., but we’ll update this page with more information as soon as we do.
How many episodes will Billy the Kid Season 2 have?

Billy the Kid Season 2 will have eight episodes, however, they will be released in blocks of four.
The original broadcast plan was to have all eight episodes air consecutively each week until the finale. However, in an interview with Cowboys & Indians, showrunner Michael Hirst revealed that the production was put on hold due to the Writers Guild of America strike:
Thank God we were so lucky, because Michael — because he’s Michael and he’s one in a million — he had written all of our scripts for Season 2 [before the WGA strike began]. So even with the writers out, we were able to shoot, because the writing was done. But the minute the actors went out, we folded up our tents and came home. So we’re sitting here on the edge of our seat waiting to get back and finish the last four episodes.

- Season 2 Episode 1, “The Road to Hell” – Sunday, October 15
- Season 2 Episode 2, “Sickness” – Sunday, October 22
- Season 2 Episode 3, “The Agony” – Sunday, October 29
- Season 2 Episode 4, “The Day of the Dead” – Sunday, November 5
Part 2 of Season 2 will air sometime in 2024.
