Discover the Time for Greninja Raid!

Are you ready for the exciting addition of Greninja to the Pokémon Scarlet and Violet roster? This event-exclusive raid is not for the faint-hearted, so make sure you are well-prepared before diving in.

Greninja’s Raid Schedule

The seven-star Tera Raids featuring Greninja will be available from Jan. 26 at 7 p.m. EST until Jan. 30 at 6:59 p.m. EST and from Feb. 9 at 7 p.m. EST until Feb. 13 at 6:59 p.m. EST. Don’t worry if you miss the first slot as you’ll have a second chance to participate. In case you completely miss the event, don’t fret! Many players will be breeding Froakie, so you can always trade for one, although it won’t come with the event-exclusive Mightiest Mark.

To access these challenging raids, you must first unlock six-star raids by clearing the Academy Ace Tournament and completing several four- and five-star raids. Once you meet the requirements, Jacq will give you a call, warning you about the power of these raid dens.

Rewards from Greninja Tera Raid

Defeat Greninja in the raid, and you’ll have the opportunity to catch it. However, you can only catch one Greninja. Even if you successfully clear the raid again, you won’t be able to catch another one. But don’t worry, after catching Greninja, you can continue to battle it for additional rewards.

Similar to previous seven-star raid targets, Greninja possesses the Hidden Ability, Protean, which enables it to change its type to that of the move it’s about to use. This ability works once per switch-in and has no effect while the Pokémon is Terastillized. So, no need to worry about it during the raid. This special Greninja also comes with perfect IVs and the Mightiest Mark.

Completing the raid will reward you with desirable loot, such as Exp. Candy, Tera Shards, and Bottle Caps. On your first clear, you’ll receive TM91 (Toxic Spikes) and an Ability Patch. However, Greninja does not drop Herba Mystica. For a complete loot table, check out Serebii.net.

Best Counters for Greninja Tera Raid

Several successful builds have emerged to take on Greninja in the Tera Raid. Among them are Clodsire, Gastrodon, and Slowbro (yes, the very same Slowbro from the Cinderace raids).

Greninja is a level 100 Pokémon with a poison Tera Type. Its moveset includes Gunk Shot, Hydro Pump, Ice Beam, Night Slash, Double Team, and Toxic Spikes. Be cautious as it will use Toxic Spikes right at the beginning of the match, poisoning your Pokémon if they faint and are thrown back into battle.

While there are various builds that can help you defeat Greninja or even solo it, we recommend the following Pokémon based on our firsthand experience and stamp of approval:

Greninja Slowbro Tera Raid Build

  • Nature: Modest
  • Ability: Doesn’t matter
  • Tera Type: Psychic
  • EVs: 4 HP/252 Defense/252 Special Attack
  • IVs: Maxed HP, Defense, Special Attack
  • Held Item: Twisted Spoon or Leftovers
  • Moveset: Stored Power (TM41), Iron Defense (TM104), and Nasty Plot (TM140)

Similar to the Cinderace raid, this Slowbro build relies on stacking Iron Defense and Nasty Plot before utilizing Stored Power. Remember to set up Iron Defense on turn one to counter Greninja’s Night Slash, a dark-type move that is super effective against Slowbro. With Iron Defense in place, the damage from Night Slash will be negligible. Keep your Slowbro healthy if your team lacks support by teaching it Heal Pulse or utilizing healing cheers.

Greninja Gastrodon Tera Raid Build

  • Nature: Modest
  • Ability: Storm Drain
  • Tera Type: Ground
  • EVs: 4 Defense/252 HP/252 Special Attack
  • IVs: Maxed HP, Defense, Special Attack
  • Held Item: Soft Sand
  • Moveset: Clear Smog (Mirror Herb move), Recover, Earth Power

To teach Gastrodon Clear Smog, remove a move from its repertoire and give it a Mirror Herb to hold. Pair it with another Pokémon that knows Clear Smog, such as Foongus or Torkoal, and participate in a 60-second picnic. Afterward, your Gastrodon should learn Clear Smog from its picnic partner.

The strategy with Gastrodon centers around debuffing Greninja’s Double Team with Clear Smog and then unleashing Earth Power. As you Terastillize, power up further and continue spamming Earth Power. Remember to heal and keep debuffing as necessary.

The prize with Gastrodon is its Storm Drain ability, which not only makes it immune to water-type moves but also absorbs all water-type moves, protecting other Pokémon in your raid as well. This ability also boosts Gastrodon’s Special Attack, turning it into a formidable hard-hitter. Say goodbye to pesky Hydro Pumps if you have a Gastrodon in your party!

Greninja Clodsire Tera Raid Build

  • Nature: Modest
  • Ability: Water Absorb
  • Tera Type: Ground
  • EVs: 4 Special Defense/252 HP/252 Special Attack
  • IVs: Maxed HP, Defense, Special Attack
  • Held Item: Leftovers
  • Moveset: Acid Spray, Helping Hand, Chilling Water, Earth Power

The Clodsire build we recommend focuses on support rather than one-shotting Greninja. However, it will help boost your team members using Gastrodon, Slowbro, or other offensive Pokémon.

Spam Chilling Water to lower Greninja’s attack and Acid Spray to reduce its Special Defense. This leaves Greninja vulnerable to attacks and decreases its damage output. Use Helping Hand to enhance your allies further and employ Earth Power to deal damage, especially after Greninja’s Special Defense has been lowered.

With Water Absorb, Clodsire becomes immune to water-type moves, and instead of taking damage from Hydro Pump, it will be healed. It remains susceptible to Ice Beam, but one-shotting should no longer be an issue. Make sure to use healing cheers appropriately.

Now that you have the information on when Greninja raids begin, prepare yourself and get ready to take on this challenging raid! Good luck, trainers!
