When Does Hibachi Close

Goings on with Grant: Hibachi Buffet closing March 24, moving to Ryan’s building

Let’s face it. Nothing says “come on in” quite like a brand-new home.

Hibachi Buffet, located at 1404 Old Aberdeen Road inside Leigh Mall, will close March 24 to move into its new location at 1201 Hwy. 45 S. in the old Ryan’s building. Plans are for the restaurant to open at its new location in May.

Owner Angela Hu originally purchased Ryan’s back in 2020 but left it vacant for more than two years. In January, she began renovating the old restaurant space.

At the time, Hu told me she was fixing it for fixing’s sake, but it appears she has made definite plans to relocate the business, according to a sign on the front door at the restaurant’s current location.

Hu did not return phone calls and messages by press time. Personally, I can’t wait to see how it all comes together.

Moving to downtown, Friendly City Books at 118 Fifth St. N. is among 10 winners of a people’s choice award in the FedEx Small Business Grant Contest, earning the business $1,000 and the chance to be one of 10 businesses across the country to win a $30,000 grant.

Owner Emily Liner said the first round consisted of a 10-day voting period from Feb. 27 to March 8, where the business with the most votes at the end of each day won $1,000. Friendly City voters came in clutch as it was the last business to win the award.

The contest is for small for-profit businesses with less than 100 employees to compete and possibly win $30,000. One hundred finalists will be selected from a pool of more than 8,000 businesses in April by FedEx. From that group, 10 winners will receive the final grants. If she wins, Liner plans to purchase custom-made bookshelves to replace the ones she started with back in 2020.

“Hopefully, winning one of the 10 people’s choice prizes will put us in the running for the top 100,” Liner said. “If we get through that round, then we’ll be eligible for the final grand prize, which would be for new bookshelves.”

Liner plans to use her winnings thus far to purchase new merchandise for the bookstore, such as tote bags, possum stickers and tea towels.

To celebrate, she is implementing a 25-percent off sale of all merchandise in the store, excluding books on Friday and Saturday.

Elsewhere in Columbus, Erin Larmour is opening Erin’s Dance Studio at 454 Wilkins-Wise Road.

Larmour said she had plans to open a recreational dance studio since she was in high school when she took recreational dancing classes and later worked for Susan Forester at her dance studio until 2015.

Larmour began thinking about the idea again in December when a rental space owned by Steel Monkey Crossfit next door to the location opened up. After mulling it over with her family, she knew God was calling her to follow the dream, she said.

The studio will open on April 3 with recreational dance classes focusing on ballet, tap dancing and jazz tap, as well as hip-hop and pop classes. Competition dancers will compete three to four times yearly for first through 12th-grade kids.

In West Point, Kristen Stevens is looking to breathe new life into the former Rose Drug Company building at 595 Commerce St. by reopening its famous gift shop.

“I’ve always wanted to do something like this,” Stevens said. “Rose just couldn’t close because it is the cornerstone of West Point downtown. It was very important to me to keep it going.”

Stevens said she will renovate the space through April and reopen in May, giving it a similar yet new name, Rose Gift Company. Once open, she hopes to expand the selection of bridal merchandise, including custom plates, cups and dining sets, as well as adding a men’s gift and children’s toy section to the store.

In Starkville, Poor House Homestead Market at 2241 Old Hwy. 25 S. reopened on Tuesday after several months of preparation by new owner Luke Sellers.

The market originally closed in November and Sellers took over in December to begin finding more vendors and reviving the store so many loved to frequent. I am glad to see his and his team’s hard work pay off.

Finally, Planet Fitness at 844 Hwy. 12 W. in the old Gordmans building opened Wednesday afternoon. I may have to pump some iron there myself.

Well, folks, that’s all for now. Make sure to check back in next week for more goings on in business.
