When Does Rdo Take Place

If you haven’t finished the SP story yet, you might want to avoid spoilers here.

Otherwise: when do you think RDRO takes place?

Seems pretty obvious that it’s before RDR2 begins, but is it 1899, or 1898, or even earlier? Hosea Matthews indicates that RDR2 begins specifically in May 1899. And there’s clearly plenty of people handing out stranger missions to you who have already died in the story, so yeah, it’s pre-RDR2. But how far is “pre”? When my online character ransacks Sadie Adler’s ranch on Mt. Hagen, I can’t help but wonder if I’ve beaten the O’Driscolls here. Is this the very eve of May 1899, or is it 1898 or even further back? I’ve seen quite a few posts here that throw around 1898 like it’s canon, but I have yet to find any video or text where it specifically states we’re in 1898.

And there’s still anomalies out there that don’t make sense. One of the biggest, for me, is the Wapiti Indian Reservation. I was really hoping for some interaction with not only Eagle Flies and Rains Fall, but the ability to adventure around there. Maybe even (eventually) own a tipi there as property, since I and my character are Native American. Instead, we find the camp abandoned, exactly as it looks in the 1907 Epilogue, long after Charles and Rains Fall took the tribe north to Canada. Why the oversight? The rez should be in full effect in RDRO.

On the subject of timelines: do you think there will be one? Will our characters evolve in a free roam campaign alongside the RDR story? We’d all certainly like to ride with Arthur and/or John at least once more, and there’s plenty of other gang members it would be fun to work for/with, like Charles, Hosea, Lenny, Karen, Javier, Micah (the bad guys would, anyway), and even Dutch himself. I’d personally love to see both the RDR2 and the RDR1 storyline weave in and out of our own character’s over the coming months (and, let’s be honest, years) that could carry us all the way up to 1911, or even 1914. Wishful thinking, I know, but this is a game of epic proportions and deserves an online story that’s equally as epic as single player.
