Oklahoma Tax-Free Weekend

Oklahoma’s annual Tax-Free Weekend comes right when parents and students are preparing to head back to class. The state’s sales tax holiday is always the first Friday through Sunday in August, which is Aug. 4-6.

During the special holiday, people can buy any product in stores, online and through catalogs as long as the item is tax-exempt. The Oklahoma Tax Commission says items that qualify for Tax-Free Weekend include any article of clothing or footwear designed to be worn on or about the body, and the sales price is less than $100.

The holiday does not apply to the sale of any accessories, special clothing or footwear primarily designed for athletic activity or protective use that is not normally worn except when used for the athletic activity or protective use or to the rental of the clothing or footwear.

Immunizations

The Oklahoma State Department of Health says all children 2 months of age and older must present an immunization record or file for an exemption before they are allowed to attend child care or school in Oklahoma. You can see the state health department’s guide to immunization requirements for the 2023-24 school year here.

You also can get the Oklahoma State Department of Health Back to School information here.

Parents also can fill out a form to exempt their children from immunizations based on medical, religious or personal reasons. The exemptions require a signature from either a licensed physician in Oklahoma, a religious leader or a parent with a reason objecting to the immunization.

School Zone and Bus Safety

The Oklahoma Commission on Children and Youth reminds drivers to share the road with school buses and to keep a watchful eye out for certain situations.

All traffic on both sides of the road must stop when a school bus is flashing its yellow or red lights are on or if the stop arm is extended. The commission also says motorists should stop at least 10-20 feet from around the school bus to allow pedestrians enough room to safely enter and exit the school bus.

Authorities also say never to pass a bus from behind. If it’s stopped, they could be loading or unloading children or pedestrians.

They also said people must follow the posted reduced speed limit laws at certain times when in a school zone.

How to Help Oklahoma Children

KOCO 5 has teamed up with the Regional Food Bank of Oklahoma ahead of the upcoming school year to make sure no Oklahoma children go to bed hungry.

Nearly 60% of Oklahoma children participate in the free or reduced-cost meal plan at their school. Food is an essential school supply, and learning cannot begin until hunger ends.

Children need access to nutritious food in order to thrive and grow. Research shows that chronic food insecurity negatively impacts the physical, emotional and cognitive development of children. The evidence is so strong that the American Academy of Pediatrics recommends food security screenings at all pediatric visits.

This is your chance to help hungry students headed back to the classroom.

Here’s how you can help: Text KIDS to 501-501 to make an automatic $10 donation (data and text rates may apply). You also can click here to donate.

Donations will be matched up to $300,000 thanks to the Masonic Fraternity of Oklahoma and other generous donors.

A $100 donation will support a child in one of the four Food for Kids programs – the Backpack Program, School Pantry Program, Summer Feeding Program and Kids Café Program – for a year. With the match, the same donation will support two children for an entire year.

Last year, the Regional Food Bank distributed nearly 2.4 million meals through its Food for Kids program.
