Who founded Sonic?

Sonic was founded in Oklahoma in 1953 and has since grown into one of the most popular fast-food chains around.

The company was founded by Troy Nuel Smith, Sr, an American businessman who got the idea of the drive-thru business while driving along the Texas-Louisiana border after his military service, according to The New York Times.

“He came up with a formula that restaurants are a people business,” said Bob Blackburn, the executive director of the Oklahoma Historical Society and the author of Sonic: The History of America’s Drive-in.

“He defined what it means to be an entrepreneur.”

Smith was born in Oklahoma on May 26, 1922, and later died on October 26, 2009, at the age of 87.

Since launching in 1953, Sonic has opened more than 3,500 locations nationwide. The company is now owned by Inspire Brands, which also owns Arby’s, Buffalo Wild Wings, Jimmy John’s, Rusty Taco, Mister Donut, Dunkin’ Donuts, and Baskin-Robbins.
