SPY×FAMILY is a Japanese manga series written and illustrated by Tatsuya Endo. The series is still ongoing and has been adapted into a popular anime series, whose second season starts on October 7, 2023. While we’re waiting for the season to start, we have decided to provide you with all the information you need to know about the upcoming season of SPY×FAMILY. This article will focus on the setting and the timeline of the second season, as you will find out when and where the second season will take place.
When does SPY×FAMILY Season 2 take place?
As far as the first season was concerned, the exact time period the series was set was never specified. The characters never use the actual calendar, and no year is ever specified. Nevertheless, based on the information we have so far, we can infer that the series takes place at some point in the early Cold War era.

The political environment and the circumstances depicted in the show all indicate that it takes place during the Cold War, and based on the show’s aesthetics, we assume it occurs sometime in the first two decades of the struggle. Regarding the subject, the espionage storyline is also quite suitable for a Cold War context, which supports our arguments even more.
This has, of course, not been officially confirmed in the series, but it is quite obvious based on what we’ve seen in the story and what we know from history. Plus, the espionage theme of the series makes perfect sense in the context of such a timeline, as espionage was a common theme in Cold War-themed works, including both novels and visual works (movies and television shows).
Where does SPY×FAMILY Season 2 take place?
Now that this has been resolved, let us talk about the series’ setting. Although the world of SPY×FAMILY is based on our world in the sense that it is realistic and completely authentic, the political entities and countries featured in the series are fictive. They are based on actual countries but are heavily stylized and different from what history tells us. The main locations are:
- Hugaria is the backdrop for a cover tale that Ostanian Service agents, notably Yuri Briar, frequently use to construct fictitious travels overseas. Obda serves as Hungary’s capital. The Tokar wine Yuri gave his allies was located in a certain Hedger Street, where there is also a Kalpatia restaurant. Hugaria’s surroundings include parts of Budapest’s Inner City (Belváros), including structures like the Inner City Parish Church. The restaurant’s exterior and name were modeled off Budapest’s actual eatery Karpatia. Hugaria’s role in the story is similar to the role of “Budapest” in the MCU, where it was used as a reference.
- Ostania’s western border is shared by Westalis. Despite playing a crucial role, nothing is known about Westalis except from its cutting-edge secret agency WISE, which was able to avoid Ostania’s State Security Agency (SSS) counterintelligence to avert any possibility of a war between the two nations.
- The People’s Republic of Ostania is a sizable nation that shares an eastern border with Westalis. Berlint serves as Ostania’s capital. The government of Ostania appears to be an odd fusion of democracy and tyranny. The naming convention is associated with communist-run nations. Ostania’s State Security Service (SSS), whose uniforms closely resemble those of the Ministry of State Security (the Stasi), appears to operate similarly to the German Democratic Republic (also known as East Germany). His journalistic follow-up work revealed that, contrary to what some people would have you assume given the moniker State Security Service (SSS), the service functions more like the Stasi than the Schutzstaffel (also known by their initials SS).

The tensions between Ostania and Westalis are the plot’s main focus, and that is why Ostania is the main location of the series. This is also why we know so much about this country. Now, you might be confused as to why we’ve been talking about the setting of the series’s first season when the article is related to the second season. Still, we have a very simple answer – the settings for both seasons are completely identical.
Namely, Episode 25 of Season 1, the first season’s final episode, adapted Chapters 37 and 38 of the manga. This means that Episode 26, the second season’s first episode, will continue with Chapter 39; up to Chapter 42, all of these chapters are part of the Imperial Scholars Mixer Arc, which means that the first season did not adapt the whole arc and that the second season will continue where the first one left off.
Since there is no mid-arc time skip or anything else, we can actually confirm that the timeline and setting of the second season are going to be the same as that of the first one, and that is why we have given you the information we have above, as it is identical.
