S.W.A.T. knows how to keep its viewers on their toes — even when the show isn’t on the air.
When the two-part season 6 finale aired back in May 2023, the attention was on Daniel “Hondo” Harrelson (Shemar Moore) as he balanced a career leading a S.W.A.T. team with a number of major life milestones. He welcomed a baby girl with his longtime girlfriend Nichelle Michaels (Rochelle Aytes), whom he later got engaged to. His unit was also working with the DEA, in order to take down a cartel boss. This storyline led to a major cliffhanger, with folks itching to see the aftermath.

But it wasn’t just the characters being handed a series of curveballs — it was viewers, too. CBS initially canceled the series and then reneged on its decision, giving fans the final season 7 they so desperately wanted. As for how Hondo’s story will be wrapped up, well, we’ll need to wait and see how it all shakes out when the CBS drama comes back.
Here’s what we know about S.W.A.T. season 7 so far.
Will there be S.W.A.T. season 7?
In early May 2023, fans were devastated after CBS initially announced that S.W.A.T. was canceled after 6 seasons. This led to an outcry from both fans and Shemar Moore, who went on Instagram to express his anger after Deadline reported that the show was one of the network’s top programs on Friday nights.
“I got sunglasses on … [because] I’m a little bit sad. I’m a lot of bit sad,” he said in an Instagram video posted on May 5. “We got canceled … It makes no sense. Look up the articles, read the articles … We’ve done nothing wrong. We did everything that was asked for.”
He continued: “To abruptly get told that you’re canceled when you led us to believe … that we would have some semblance of a season 7 to at least say goodbye, if not continue, and to abruptly be told you’re done … They said we’re canceled, but guess what? I don’t think we’re done.”
Luckily, CBS heard the cries from the cast and viewers alike, because less than a week later, the network reversed its decision, revealing that S.W.A.T. would be back for season 7. What’s more, the network announced that the final season would wrap up over the course of 13 episodes.

“We have listened to our viewers and their outpouring of passion for S.W.A.T. and we have reached an agreement to renew it for a final season of 13 episodes to air during the 2023-2024 broadcast year,” said Amy Reisenbach, CBS Entertainment’s president, and Katherine Pope, Sony Pictures Television Studios’s president, in a statement, per Deadline. “S.W.A.T. has aired for six seasons on CBS and garnered a devoted following. We are pleased that we found a way to bring it back and give closure to the show’s storylines and characters, which audiences deserve.”
As soon as the news broke, Shemar went back on Instagram to express his elation over the news that the show was going to be returning to primetime. “Ayyeee!!!!! We did it #SWATFAM!!!” he wrote on May 8. “@swatcbs is coming back for a 7th and final season with 13 episodes!!! Thank you to all of you for the continued and amazing support!! Let’s go 👊🏽💯🔥💪🏽.”

“Hands in — Season 7 is just a ways away,” read the November 13 caption for a meme of Hondo proposing to Nichelle at the end of season 6. “Do you copy? #SWAT.”
