When Does The NFL Playoffs Start?

The 2023 NFL Season Playoffs have come to an end, with the Kansas City Chiefs emerging victorious in Super Bowl LVIII. The postseason was filled with excitement, from surprise upsets to thrilling finishes and incredible displays of athleticism. If you’re new to the NFL, you might have some lingering questions about how it all happened. Don’t worry, we’re here to help. Here’s a quick guide to understanding how the NFL Playoffs work.

Who Makes the NFL Playoffs?

The key to making the Playoffs is simple: win as many games as possible. The teams with the most wins earn the opportunity to compete in the postseason. However, there’s more to it than that.

The NFL is divided into two conferences – the American Football Conference (AFC) and the National Football Conference (NFC). Each conference sends seven teams to the playoffs, making a total of 14 competitors. The team with the best record in each conference becomes the number one seed and secures an automatic playoff berth. They also enjoy the advantage of skipping the first round and waiting for their first opponent in the second round. This season, the Baltimore Ravens and the San Francisco 49ers claimed the top seeds in their respective conferences.

In addition to the number one seeds, three more teams from each conference are division champions. These teams won their respective divisions and earned a spot in the playoffs. For example, the Dallas Cowboys, Detroit Lions, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and San Francisco 49ers were the NFC division champions, while the Kansas City Chiefs, Buffalo Bills, Houston Texans, and Baltimore Ravens were the AFC division champions.

The remaining three spots in each conference are allocated to “Wild Card” teams. These are the teams with the best records among all non-division champions in their conference. Each conference ends up with a total of seven teams in the playoffs. In the event of tiebreakers, the NFL employs various factors such as head-to-head results, win percentage within the division, and strength of schedule.

When Are the NFL Playoffs?

The NFL season is a long journey that starts with preseason games in August and concludes with the regular season in early January. After that, the Playoffs begin, usually around mid-January. The Playoffs span three weeks, climaxing with the Conference Championships. Following the Championships, there is a week-long break for the Pro Bowl, and then it’s time for the Super Bowl.

The Super Bowl, the pinnacle of the NFL season, takes place on February 9, 2025, at the Superdome in New Orleans. After the Super Bowl, football fans have to wait patiently for about six months until the start of the next NFL season and almost a year for the next Super Bowl.
