When Is Wrestling Season and Where Do We Compete?

Back to Main FAQ Page

When Is the normal wrestling season?Scholastic wrestling is a winter sport. Fall Pre-Season starts after Labor Day in September and concludes in October. Folkstyle (youth, JH, and HS) season runs from November to the end of January. Freestyle/Greco Roman style season starts late February and continue through the summer.

What is the difference between Folkstyle and Freestyle/Greco Roman wrestling?Without getting into the nuances of each style, each wrestling style has their own rules which dictate how you can and cannot wrestle, the length of the match, the number of periods per match, and how points are scored. Folkstyle is the most common wrestling style in the United States and the style used by youth, high school and collegiate wrestling competitions in the United States. Freestyle and Greco Roman are each their own style and more common in other parts of the world. Olympic wrestlers compete in those two styles. There are a number of good websites you can find with an internet search if you want to know more specifics on each wrestling style.

What are dual meets?During the youth “folkstyle” season, competitions consist of dual meets and tournaments. Meets against local clubs are limited to two to three per season and held during the work week with the goal to keep driving distances to no more than 30-45 minutes away (i.e. – Beauregard, Opelika, and Smiths Station). For these local meets, wrestlers are paired by age, weight, and experience. Most will have a single match while a few may get a second.

When and where are tournaments?During the season, tournaments are scheduled nearly every Saturday and mostly held in the Birmingham or Montgomery regions.

What can we expect at tournaments?– Wrestlers are placed in brackets by both age groups and weight class.- Wrestling tournaments can run a bit long (at least 3-4 hours). Pack snacks and games for siblings.- In rare occasions there may not be an opponent close in age and weight. In that case they can wrestle in a different division (higher weight or age).- Fees range between $15 and $25 with start times determined by age group. Younger wrestlers usually compete from 9:00 AM – 12:00 noon. Older groups start around 1:00 PM. Wrestlers typically have between 2-5 matches depending on the number of entrants in each weight class. Admission prices vary from free to $10 per adult. Tournament as well as wrestling related t-shirts are sold at most tournaments.- We ask parents stay as positive as possible as it can get pretty competitive. Our goal is for them to have a positive learning experience, learn how to persevere, test their limits, and stand strong knowing that they can push harder and farther than they ever thought they could, ultimately developing their character. By keeping it positive for your wrestler, they will have a much greater chance of continuing with the sport as they get older.

What can/should I bring to the tournament? The meets, and especially tournaments, can be long and tiring, so the most important thing for a spectator is to be comfortable. Wear casual clothes; take a cushion, comfortable shoes, things to snack on and perhaps something to occupy your time between rounds at tournaments. This is also a good time to get to know other parents and their families. Many friendships are built at these tournaments which helps to foster team unity.

Snacks can consist of a wide variety of foods, from sandwiches to dry cereal, raisins, fruit, yogurt, and pasta. Drinks can range from bottled water to sports drinks. Our coaches request that the wrestlers bring healthy vice junk foods.

Is a parent required to attend the tournaments with their child(ren?Yes. The pace of tournaments is often quite hectic for parents, wrestlers, and even coaches. Parental presence is vital to assist their wrestler (as well as the coaches) with monitoring match schedules. More importantly, if a child is injured and needs medical attention, it is imperative a parent or guardian be available for consultation.

This is my child’s first year. How do I know if hey are ready to compete?Your wrestler can compete as soon as you and your wrestler feel like they are ready to compete. Your coach could provide a recommendation based on your child’s performance at practice. The first match for anyone is a nerve-wracking experience. Simulated matches during practice will help first year wrestlers ease into the competition mindset. Once the first match is completed and the wrestler begins to understand the process, the nerves tend to settle.

How do I find out about other tournaments outside of the club’s season? Our best advice is to visit www.trackwrestling.com. There are links to tournaments all across the states. Those tournaments can be small in size, to brackets that include 32+ wrestlers. If a wrestler is just starting to learn, we encourage parents to stay local in order for the fundamentals of wrestling to be learned.

Do I have to go to all of the tournaments on the team calendar? You can pick and choose which ones you would like to attend but being that there are only 6-8 tournaments during the season, we recommend going to as many as possible to gain experience.

How does my child become a starter with the club?Club participants do not compete for starting positions on the team. This only happens at the junior high, high school and college levels of wrestling when teams wrestle in a dual format. Most of the regular season tournaments are open to all members.Back to Main FAQ Page
