At the end of 1974 and the beginning of 1975, the Central Committee of the Party devised a strategy to completely liberate the South within 1975 and 1976 based on an assessment of the forces in the South favoring the Revolution. They asserted that ‘the entire year of 1975 is the opportunity’ and clearly defined that ‘if the opportunity arises in early or late 1975, then immediately liberate the entire South’. After the campaigns in the Central Highlands and Hue – Da Nang concluded with victories for our forces, the Central Committee identified this as a strategic opportunity for our forces to swiftly accomplish the mission of liberating the South.

What is the historical significance of April 30th?
On April 26th at 5 PM, our troops launched the campaign. The enemy’s defense line was breached, and our forces advanced into the heart of Saigon, seizing the enemy’s nerve centers. At 10:45 AM on April 30th, our armored tanks entered Independence Palace, capturing the entire Saigon Cabinet, leading to an unconditional surrender by Duong Van Minh. At 11:30 AM on April 30th, the revolutionary flag was hoisted over Independence Palace, signaling the victory of the historic Ho Chi Minh campaign.
The success of our Party in leading the revolutionary war in the spring of 1975 demonstrated the wisdom and strategic prowess of the Party and the State, as well as the self-reliant spirit of the Vietnamese people in the struggle against invasion.
