When Is Beggars Night 2023

Iowans have plenty of odd-ball traditions, and Halloween in the Des Moines metro is a perfect example. Trick-or-treating dates and times are traditionally held on Beggars’ Night, in the evening hours on Oct. 30, the night before Halloween.

The tradition started about 80 years ago to curb the violence and vandalism that had become an annual problem on Halloween night in Des Moines. And don’t forget, children have to tell a joke in order to snag a treat.

Some central Iowa cities are shifting Beggars’ Night to the last Saturday in October

This year, some cities are choosing to celebrate Beggars’ Night even earlier than Oct. 30, advocating that the annual celebration be hosted on the last Saturday of October instead of on a week night. Bondurant started the trend last year, and a few communities, including Windsor Heights, have followed this year.

Mayor Mike Jones of Windsor Heights said parents have been inconvenienced by Beggars’ Night falling on a weeknight, which happens more than half the time with the Oct. 30 date.

“Kids will likely be up past the hours they’d normally be winding down for bed as they have school in the morning, and probably don’t even want to go to bed,” Jones said in an email to the Register, “Thus, the proposal was to make it a fixed day closest to Halloween — and sometimes actually on Halloween — that would eliminate all of those issues.”
