When Is Carti Dropping

New year, new music from Playboi Carti. On Jan. 1, the rap star released “Backr00ms,” his newest collaboration with rap colleague Travis Scott.

In their decidedly lo-fi video, Carti and Scott take turns rapping in a garage near an SUV tank, with scenes of Carti showering a dancer with money inside a drab office space spliced throughout.

The chorus goes: “In the middle of the field, throw me a bomb, I’m throwin’ that bih like a quarterback/Standin’ in the field, holdin’ a bomb, throwin’ that ho like a quarterback/Stood in the field, hold me a bomb, throwin’ that ho like a quarterback.”

Carti and Scott announced the collab earlier on Monday morning. “New music. Carti. Travis Scott. Dropping [bleep] today,” shouted British artist Blackhaine with a stretched image of the “Parental Advisory” symbol, and the words “9:30 Monday” covering his face.

“OOBABTUS,” Scott captioned the post.

The collaboration is Carti’s first new music since 2021’s “Unlock It” with ABRA and “Miss the Rage” with Trippie Redd.” He’s been teasing an album titled Music, and the new song seems to be the first taste of it. Carti’s producer F1lthy has also shared hints that new music from the “Magnolia” rapper is on the way.

When asked by XXL what he’d name his upcoming record last spring, he responded: “Music because that’s all it is at this point.”

Carti last released an album in 2020 with Whole Lotta Red, which featured songs with Kid Cudi, Kanye West, and Future. He also postponed his Antagonist Tour to 2024, which kicks off on Jan. 14 in Salt Lake City.

The new song marks the fourth time Scott and Carti join forces on a track. Carti joined Scott on Utopia‘s “Fein,” while Scott rapped with Carti on 2018’s “Love Hurts” from LP Die Lit, and Carti joined Scott on 2017’s “Green & Purple.”

“’Fein’ is the kind of beat that’s good enough for Playboi Carti to repeat himself 182 times over,” per the Rolling Stone review of the rapper’s collab on Utopia.

Scott brought out Carti for a live performance of “Fein” during the Los Angeles Stop of his Circus Maximus tour at SoFi Stadium in November.
