Celebrate Dr. Seuss Week 2023 in Style

Dr. Seuss Day

Do you love Dr. Seuss and his whimsical world of rhymes and imagination? Then mark your calendars because Dr. Seuss Week is just around the corner! Every year, on March 2nd, we celebrate the birthday of Theodor Seuss Geisel, the genius behind the beloved Dr. Seuss books. This special day is not only a celebration of his legacy but also an opportunity to inspire a love for reading in children across the United States.

The Fascinating History of Dr. Seuss Day

Born on March 2nd, 1904, in Springfield, Massachusetts, Theodor Seuss Geisel was a man of many talents. While studying at Dartmouth College, he discovered his passion for writing and humor. Geisel contributed to the Dartmouth Jack-O-Lantern, a renowned humor magazine, where he eventually became the editor-in-chief. However, an encounter with Prohibition laws led to his resignation, but he continued to work under the pseudonym “Seuss.”

Geisel’s journey took him to Lincoln College, Oxford, where he pursued a Ph.D. in English Literature. During this time, he met Helen Palmer, who played a pivotal role in his decision to pursue a career in art. Fast forward to World War II, Geisel used his artistic talents to create political cartoons that bravely criticized Hitler, Mussolini, and the war itself. His support for President Roosevelt and critical stance towards Congress earned him recognition and admiration.

After the war, Dr. Seuss embarked on a new adventure: writing children’s books. From his home in La Jolla, California, he ignited imaginations with classics like “If I Ran the Zoo,” “Horton Hears a Who!,” “If I Ran the Circus,” “The Cat in the Hat,” “How the Grinch Stole Christmas!,” and “Green Eggs and Ham.” In fact, “The Cat in the Hat” was a response to a concern raised by Life Magazine that children were not interested in reading because they found most children’s books dull. Dr. Seuss wrote the book using only 236 words that were considered essential for first-graders to learn.

Dr. Seuss’s contributions to children’s literature continued until his passing on September 24th, 1991. However, his legacy lives on. Even today, his books continue to captivate young readers. In 2009 alone, “The Cat in the Hat” sold over 450,000 copies, “Green Eggs and Ham” sold over 540,000 copies, and “One Fish Two Fish Red Fish Blue Fish” sold over 400,000 copies.

On Dr. Seuss Day, join the nation in celebrating the joy of reading by immersing yourself in the world of books. Take a moment to read a favorite book with your child.
