When Is Father’s Day Mexico

Celebrating Father’s Day is a way for people to show their dads how much they mean to them.

Fatherhood comes in many forms, from biological dads to adoptive fathers, stepdads, grandfathers, and anyone considered a father figure.

This special day is often marked with Father’s Day cards, gifts, and celebrations, from dining out to BBQs in honor of the leading man. While there are an estimated 72 million fathers across the United States, the day also allows us to spare a thought for those who may not be able to celebrate Father’s Day.

Let’s look at why and how people celebrate Father’s Day in the United States, Mexico, and other regions of the world. Plus, we’ll take a walk through the origins of this dad-centric occasion.

The History of Celebrating Father’s Day

Today, Father’s Day involves giving greeting cards, often with funny messages, along with gifts and spending time with Dad.

But we need to travel back to the origins of Mother’s Day to unearth the history of Father’s Day celebrations in the United States. In West Virginia, Anna Jarvis started the Mother’s Day movement by holding a small memorial service for her mother on May 12, 1907. Mother’s Day came from this start and is now commemorated every second Sunday in May in the United States.

Father’s Day is a little more complex, with two versions of its inception.

The first is that, in 1909, a Washington state woman called Sonora Smart Dodd was listening to a Mother’s Day sermon at the Central Methodist Church in Spokane, Washington. Dodd was one of six children brought up by their widower farmer father, William Jackson Smart. He’d lost his wife, Ellen Victoria Cheek Smart, during childbirth in 1898.

Smart was a Civil War veteran, and Dodd felt a day was required to honor fathers. Dodd interrupted the sermon and then lobbied the Spokane Ministerial Association and the YMCA to use her father’s birthday, the 5th of June, as a day for celebrating fathers.

The second version claims the idea for Father’s Day began in Fairmont, West Virginia. On July 5, 1908, Grace Golden Clayton suggested that fathers should be celebrated in services to her local Methodist minister. Her idea came after a mining accident had killed 361 men in the state in December 1907.

When Was Father’s Day First Celebrated in the United States?

Whichever you believe, Dodd’s determination saw her home state of Washington mark its first official Father’s Day the following year. The date was Sunday, June 19, 1910, later than requested by Dodd because of a crammed calendar.

The concept spread from state to state, but Father’s Day faced many more obstacles before it would become the established national holiday many of us enjoy today.

President Woodrow Wilson backed celebrating Father’s Day as early as 1913. President Calvin Coolidge took up the reins in 1924 but experienced an unexpected pushback.

Father’s Day was initially well-received, but it would take more than 60 years to be recognized as a national holiday.

Some dads considered the day a gimmick or Hallmark holiday invented for commercial gains. The 1920s and 1930s saw a campaign for Mother’s Day and Father’s Day to be scrapped and replaced with a joint Parents’ Day.

The Great Depression and World War II were what propelled celebrating Father’s Day to national acceptance. Retailers were desperate to sell goods during the Great Depression, and Father’s Day represented an irresistible opportunity. World War II saw people keen to honor fathers serving overseas. Both further pushed the popularity of Father’s Day.

President Lyndon Johnson next picked up the Father’s Day baton. He declared the third Sunday of June as Father’s Day in 1966. It was left to President Richard Nixon to make Father’s Day a national holiday in 1972.

Celebrating Father’s Day in Your Unique Way

Every father figure has a unique personality, which they impart into their loved ones’ lives. Father’s Day is a chance to thank them for everything they have done and will most likely continue to do.

Whatever the origins, Father’s Day is a chance to recognize and appreciate the invaluable work of fathers, grandfathers, adoptive fathers, and other figures in our day-to-day lives. Celebrating Father’s Day with your dad can be as simple as you wish. A hug and a poem may warm their soul as much as a fiery new chili sauce will heat up their palate. No matter where or how you celebrate, thoughtful gifts given from the heart and kind words are sure to bring a smile to their faces on Father’s Day.
