For the UK the day falls on the last Sunday of March each year.

This year the day falls on March 26, exactly three weeks before Easter Sunday.

Initially a Christian celebration, Mothering Sunday has become a worldwide holiday to show mums how much they are appreciated.

Marking the maternal bond that exists between a mother and child, the day celebrates other mothering figures such as grandmothers, stepmums and mother-in-laws too.

However the dates for this day aren’t fixed and change not only in the UK annually, but also all around the globe.

Why does the date of Mother’s Day change each year?

Stemming back to its Christian roots, the date for Mother’s Day has always changed every year since the 16th century.

This is because it is linked to Easter, which is different every year as it is determined by the lunar calendar.

It always falls on the fourth Sunday during Lent, when people typically give up things for the days leading up to Easter.

What are some of the different dates globally?

While in Portugal, Spain, among others, the day falls on the the first Sunday of May.

In France and Sweden the holiday takes place on last Sunday of May, occasionally the first Sunday of June.

For the likes of Russia, the day occurs on the last Sunday of November, and December 22 for Indonesia.

How did Mother’s Day begin?

The origins of Mother’s Day date back as far as the ancient Greeks where they annually held a spring festival to maternal goddesses.

The ancient Romans also celebrated a spring festival called Hilaria which was for a mother goddess called Cybele.

More recent origins of Mothering Sunday date back to the 16th century in England when it took place on the fourth Sunday of Lent.

It was initially a day for Christians to visit their ‘mother church’. Servants were granted the day off to return to their hometown and worship with their families. On the way home, some people would pick wildflowers to place in the church, or to give to mothers, which is often why flowers are linked to this day.

But how it is celebrated now began in America during the early 20th century.
