The day is observed throughout the country as a time to honor mothers and mother figures alike. Although Spaniards buy gifts, flowers, and chocolates, many children prefer to make cards and presents for their mothers.

In Serbia, Mother’s Day, along with Children’s Day and Father’s Day, is observed in December rather than May. But this is not the only difference that distinguishes the holiday from that in other countries. Children in Serbia sneak into their mother’s bedroom on Mother’s Day and tie her up in bed! She must give them the small gifts and treats in return for being untied. Rope is used on Children’s Day and Father’s Day too!

In Japan, the holiday is known as Haha-no-hi, derived from the word hahaoya which means mother in Japanese. Carnations are especially popular gifts as they are considered a symbol of mothers’ sweetness, purity and endurance. Children commonly draw portraits of their mothers which they enter into contests. During the Showa era, Mother’s Day commemorated Empress Kojun’ birthday (March 6, 1903). The modern tradition of celebrating Mother’s Day in Japan began in 1913.
France
La Fete des Meres, or Mother’s Day Celebrations in France, takes place in late May or early June and is based upon Pentecost. Though Mother’s Day didn’t become an official holiday until 1950, it was originally declared one by Napoleon. Similar to how it is celebrated in other countries, it is a day for mothers to relax. Often children will write short poems that they recite in honor of their mothers. A large family meal ends the day.
Mexico
Mother’s Day, or Dia de las Madres, is celebrated on May 10th in Mexico. A popular holiday, there are many special events at schools, churches, and homes. The family tradition is for sons and daughters to come to their mother’s house on the eve of Mother’s Day. Mother’s Day masses, handmade gifts, flowers, and children’s school presentations are typically part of the celebration.

In Ethiopia, Mother’s Day is celebrated at the end of the fall rainy season as part of the three-day Antrosht festival dedicated to mothers. Once the rain stops, family members come home to celebrate with a large feast. Daughters traditionally bring vegetables, butter, spices, and cheese, while sons provide meat of various types, most commonly lamb or bull. These are used to cook a traditional hash recipe for the meal. All family members participate in singing and dancing.
