When Is National Pig Day

We celebrate our eleven pigs every day, but March 1st is National pig day. Pigs are fascinating animals with so many unique and interesting characteristics and just like us, each pig has a very distinct personality of their own. They are known for their intelligence, in fact this is one of the most well-known characteristics of pigs. Studies have shown that pigs are capable of complex problem-solving, emotional intelligence, and even have long-term memories. We can definitely vouch for that at the farm, George, the first pig to join the FarmHouse Rescue family in particular remembers everything and quite possibly believes he’s in charge of the farm! They can also learn new tasks quickly and remember them for a long time. Their intelligence has led some to compare them to dogs and even some primates in terms of cognitive ability.

Pigs are also very social creatures and thrive in groups. They are known for forming close bonds with other pigs and even have their own hierarchy within their social groups. They use different sounds to communicate with each other, in fact you might not believe how noisy pigs can be. They are also very loyal animals, they have even been known to defend their friends from threats.

Contrary to popular belief, pigs are actually quite clean animals. They instinctively create separate areas for sleeping, eating, and going to the bathroom. They are also known to be very meticulous about grooming themselves and each other. In addition, pigs have a strong sense of smell and are able to detect and avoid contaminated food and water sources.

They are extremely resourceful animals, capable of finding food and water in almost any environment. They can forage for food in the wild and can even dig for underground roots and tubers with their strong snouts.

Pigs have a relatively low environmental impact compared to other livestock animals. They are able to convert plant matter into high-quality protein more efficiently than other animals, and their manure can be used as a valuable fertilizer.

So, you see why we celebrate pigs, these are amazing animals with many interesting characteristics. They are an important part of many cultures and ecosystems around the world. By celebrating pigs and learning more about their amazing traits, we can appreciate these fascinating creatures and work towards a more compassionate and sustainable future.
