First opened in Cambridge in 2016, Mamaleh’s became an instant hit, with lines trailing out the door. The Jewish deli offers all the classics, including bagels, breakfast sandwiches, Reubens, hot dogs, and more. Be sure to try the Nova lox sandwich, with dill cream cheese, tomato, capers, and red onions, or the pastrami Reuben, with Russian dressing, Swiss cheese, and sauerkraut on seeded rye bread.

Zaftigs Delicatessen

Zaftigs Brookline has been a neighborhood staple for nearly 25 years. The restaurant is most famous for its chicken matzo ball soup, but it also serves some great deli sandwiches. Customers can build their own sandwich by choosing their own meat, bread, and add-ons, and can pair it with their choice of a side. Zaftigs also offers a wide selection of specialty sandwiches, like the Rachel with turkey, Swiss cheese, sauerkraut, and Russian dressing on grilled pumpernickel bread, or the falafel wrap with tzatziki sauce, diced tomato, red onion, and lettuce.

Michael’s Deli

Michael’s Deli has operated out of Brookline for nearly 40 years, and in that time their award-winning corned beef sandwich has earned the restaurant the title of “corned beef king.” As a New York style deli, all of the shop’s meat is imported from the Bronx. Create a custom sandwich with meats like the balsamic and fig glazed pastrami or the mango and curry chicken salad or opt for a signature creation like the Thanksgiving Feast (turkey breast, homemade stuffing, and cranberry sauce on your choice of toasted bread) or the Benny (hot beef salami and scallion cream cheese on toasted cissel).

Once you try one of Cutty’s sandwiches, it will come as no surprise that owners Rachel and Charles Kelsey have 45 years of combined cooking experience. Cutty’s prides itself on serving fresh food, offering all-natural meats and cheeses and eggs and dairy from local farms. If you’re in the market for some seasonal esoterica, garnish your homemade specials with Cutty’s secret salt or the premium pickled pearl onions. Try the Turkey 1000 (with crispy shallots, Thousand Island dressing, and sharp cheddar) or the Greens Shallot (with Swiss chard, crispy shallots, and saffron yogurt).

Most famous for its cheesesteaks, Bennett’s offers nine specialty cheesesteak creations. Be sure to try its famous steak and cheese, with sirloin steak shaved to perfection, American cheese, grilled onions, peppers, and mushrooms. There is also a variety of other menu options, including cold and hot subs, melts, Maine lobster rolls, and egg sandwiches. For breakfast, try the Market Square (fried eggs, American cheese, lettuce, tomato, raw onion, mayo, and ketchup) or a classic bacon, egg, and cheese sandwich.

Charlie’s Sandwich Shoppe

Charlie’s, a Boston institution, has been serving sandwiches since 1927. The restaurant is hailed as an inclusive safe haven and was even featured in the Green Book, a guide to businesses that welcomed Black customers during the 1930s. Feast on one of the old-school diner’s signature sandwiches, like the classic BLT or the chicken Milanese on ciabatta bread, prepared with homemade basil aioli, breaded chicken, balsamic glazed onions, spinach, and pepper jack cheese. While you wait for your order, check out the memorabilia and old photos of Boston that adorn the historic walls.

Chacarero was founded by Chilean native Juan Hurtado, who originally sold his sandwiches out of a pushcart. Once word got out about the delicious sandwiches, Hurtado opened a brick-and-mortar location in Downtown Crossing. Chacarero serves chacareros (traditional Chilean sandwiches) made with homemade bread, grilled steak or chicken, and topped with muenster cheese, tomatoes, and steamed green beans. What makes Chacarero unique is its avocado sandwich spread, prepared using a secret recipe.

Bricco Salumeria carries all the ingredients for you to make your own fresh sandwiches at home: loaves of Italian fresh bread, meats and cheeses, olive oils, vinegars, and tomatoes. Half grocer, half delicatessen, Dave’s Fresh Pasta is a Davis Square staple that, ironically, is best known for its standout sandwiches. The one-stop shop also sells 200 different cheeses, from Italy, Spain, and France, as well as locally produced meats from New England farms, antipasti, wood-fired pizzas (new to the business), and handmade pasta and ravioli, along with sauces. But know that nothing compares to their pressed panini. Next time you find yourself ravenous and ready to eat the best sandwich of your entire life, try the fan-favorite prosciutto and fig (with fresh mozzarella, dried fig jam, baby arugula, and olive oil), the classic Italian, or the pesto chicken, grilled with aged asiago and roasted red peppers.
