Can I use coupons during Florida’s tax-free week to lower the price of an item?

Yes. If a retailer offers a coupon or discount that brings an item’s price below the exemption threshold, it will be tax-free. For example, say you want a jacket that costs $105. The merchant offers a $10-off coupon that brings the cost to $95. It will be tax-free. One important exception, however, is manufacturers’ coupons. These coupons require the store to ask for reimbursement from the manufacturer, so Florida law doesn’t see them the same way as it sees store coupons. So, even if a manufacturer coupon would bring the price of an item below its threshold, you’ll still have to pay taxes on the purchase.

Do Florida tax-free savings apply to online purchases?

Yes. If you live in Florida and make an online purchase within the time window of Florida’s sales tax holiday (and that purchase order is accepted by the merchant), you won’t have to pay taxes, provided that item fits the requirements above. However, Florida considers delivery costs to be part of the item’s cost for online purchases. So, if you shop during the back-to-school sales tax event and purchase a dress that costs $99, and shipping costs $5, you’d be over the threshold for clothing and therefore have to pay sales tax.

Tips for shopping Florida’s tax-free weeks and holidays

Don’t let the allure of waived taxes tempt you into buying items you don’t need. After all, the dollar amount of waived taxes will be modest for most items. However, when it comes to electronics, tax-free holidays can be a great time to shop. Getting the 6% state sales tax waived on a $900 computer gets you an instant $54 discount. So research your options carefully, look at concurrent sales and promo codes, and plan to make your computer purchase during a retailer’s sale.
