When Is The Best Time To Get A 3d Ultrasound

3D and 4D ultrasounds are an exciting and beautiful bonding experience for expectant parents.

What you’re able to see during a 3D or 4D ultrasound depends on your stage of pregnancy. Take a look at our recommended time for an ultrasound below!

Best Timing for a 3D or 4D Ultrasound

For the best results, we recommend that you book an elective prenatal ultrasound when you’re around 25 to 28 weeks pregnant.

This is the stage of pregnancy where the baby is just the right size and the development of facial features has begun!

3D or 4D ultrasounds can be done as early as 13 to 15 weeks but facial features aren’t very clear.

Anything after 30 weeks, makes it harder for the sonographer to capture a clear image or video since your baby has descended into your pelvis. It is still possible to get good results from a 3D or 4D ultrasound after 30 weeks, but the conditions have to be just right.

3D or 4D Ultrasound Stages

Ultrasounds are done at various stages throughout your pregnancy. While we recommend booking your 3D/4D ultrasound experience between 25 and 28 weeks of pregnancy, it’s also good to know what results you might get during other weeks. Here’s what you can expect during an ultrasound based on how many weeks pregnant you are:

14 to 18 Weeks Pregnantpregnant woman holding an avocado to her belly to show size of fetus

At this point, your baby is about the size of an avocado! You’ll be able to see the entire baby in one image. Their whole body will be developed but there won’t be much to see otherwise. There won’t be many distinguishing features developed yet, but they are quite active at this stage! If they’re awake during the scan, you’ll be able to see all their unfelt movements.

19 to 26 Weeks Pregnant

This is the point at which your baby’s facial features will be developed and more prominent. The baby is much bigger at this point so the sound waves from the ultrasound travel a shorter distance, picking up better echoes. As a result, you get a very clear image!

From 25 weeks on, your baby’s hands and feet are less likely to be covering their face, making it easier to get a good look!

27 to 40 Weeks Pregnant

From this point on, your baby looks very close to what they will look like when they’re born. They’ll have a fuller face with chubby cheeks, and you may be able to see them opening and closing their eyes.

An ultrasound at this stage means you won’t be able to get your baby’s entire body in one shot! However, the detail you’ll be able to see in the face makes it well worth it!
