When Is The Dominican Independence Day

History

The history of Dominican Republic independence can be traced back to 1821 when the people of the island of Hispaniola overthrew the Spanish colonisers. Following this development, the island unified into one nation, combining Haiti and the Dominican Republic into one independent country.

The Dominican Republic declared its independence from Haiti on February 27, 1844. On this day, a group called La Trinitaria (The Trinity) began a movement that fought for the country’s sovereignty. The movement was led by writer and activist Juan Pablo Duarte, who is widely known as the father of the Dominican Republic.

In their struggle for freedom, the La Trinitaria movement at Puerto del Conde seized their moment against foreign occupants. Once atop the fort, Juan Pablo Duarte raised the blue, red, and white flags high in the sky to mark their freedom from foreign rule.

Celebrations

On this day, citizens of the country pay tribute to the brave individuals who secured independence for the nation and appreciate their history, culture. To mark celebrations of Independence Day, people across the country gather with loved ones and display their patriotism. The national holiday also takes place during Carnaval de la Vega.

Carnaval de la Vega carnival marks a month-long celebration in February, which adds to the festive mood. People wear vibrant costumes and flashy masks on this day and enjoy traditional delicacies like bacalao (dried, salted cod) and mangu (mashed plantains). Moreover, many towns and cities send a representative to the parade that takes place in the town of La Vega, which is known to have had some of the oldest carnival celebrations.

Jersey City and the Juan Pablo Duarte Association together will be hosting Independence Day celebrations today. The flag raising ceremony will take place from 10 am to 1:30 pm at City Hall at 280 Grove Street.
