When Is The Last Time The Broncos Beat The Chiefs

The Broncos have existed in the unfortunate situation of sharing a division with the Chiefs. Any other team cringes when they see “KC” pop up on their schedule during a season. Denver knows it happens twice a year.

Since Patrick Mahomes became the starting quarterback of Kansas City in 2018, the Chiefs have lost to only 13 different teams: the Lions, Bengals, Bills, Colts, Titans, Chargers, Ravens, Raiders, Packers, Texans, Seahawks, Rams and Patriots. Despite facing the Broncos twice a year, Kansas City has not lost to Denver during that span.

Until Sunday. The Broncos finished off a 24-9 win over the Chiefs, stunning the one-loss, reigning Super Bowl champions to end a long losing streak.

How long has it been since Denver put one in the win column against the Chiefs? Here’s what you need to know.

Last time Broncos beat Chiefs

The date was Sept. 17, 2015. The location? Arrowhead Stadium. Andy Reid was still the coach of the Chiefs. But other than the coach, so much was different.

Peyton Manning was the quarterback of the Broncos, while Alex Smith was quarterbacking the Chiefs. Mahomes, meanwhile, would be playing in a game for Texas Tech against Arkansas two days later in his second season with the Red Raiders.

Manning completed 26-of-45 passes for 256 yards with three touchdowns and one interception. Smith, on the other hand, went 16-for-25 with 191 yards and two picks. He did not throw a touchdown.

Though the quarterback play was one-sided, the game wasn’t. The Chiefs got off to a 14-0 lead in the second quarter on a 34-yard touchdown run from Jamaal Charles and a 55-yard Marcus Peters pick-six. But Manning threw two straight touchdowns in the final 2:31 of the first half to even the game.

The teams matched field goals in the third quarter, then traded touchdowns late in the fourth, with Knile Davis rushing from eight yards out to give the Chiefs a lead with 2:27 left before Emmanuel Sanders caught a 19-yard touchdown pass with 36 seconds left.

The game ended in devastating fashion for the Chiefs. On the first play after the Broncos’ kickoff, Charles fumbled the ball on a 1-yard run. The ball was recovered by Bradley Roby, who took it 21 yards to the end zone for a touchdown to make it a 31-24 game. The Chiefs had 27 seconds left, but after a Smith run for 11 yards, he was sacked to end the game.

Broncos losing streak to Chiefs

Since that Manning-led Broncos win, however, it has been all Kansas City. The Chiefs won 16 straight games against the Broncos, starting the streak on Nov. 15, 2015.

During those contests, the Chiefs have won by an average of 11.25 points. Only once, on Nov. 27, 2016, has the game even gone to overtime.

Denver came close to ending the streak in recent years, with three of the past four games all being within single digits. But from 2019 to the first game in 2020, the Chiefs won by at least 20 points in each victory.

Here’s a look at each of the games, including the last Broncos’ win against the Chiefs.
