Did the Purge ever happen in real life?
As per Looper, Purge did happen in real life and the activities inspired the movie as well. However, it happened centuries ago when Roman Pagans celebrated a festival called Saturnalia.

The outlet noted that this weeklong “celebration,” which took place from December 17th to December 25th, allowed people to do anything they wished without worrying about the consequences.
The festival mainly pushed people to get intoxicated and live their greatest fantasies. Due to this, there was a high volume of vandalism and violence that took place. Given that most of the people took part in this, the Roman courts were shut for this duration and everyone had to look after themselves.
What is the movie Purge all about?
As stated before, the events that happened centuries ago inspired the movie Purge. However, it wasn’t the only film that took some of the examples from the festival.
The outlet notes that Star Trek was the first movie that took examples from this event for a concept to be showcased in the film. The episode was known as Return of the Archons.

The movie Purge revolves around the time period when the American government hosts an annual 12-hour period during which all criminal activity, no matter how serious it may be, is legal. The plot continues to revolve around a family that ends up in a dangerous situation when an intruder enters their home.

What is the new Safe-T Act all about?
As per Rockford Register Star, on January 1, 2023, around 400 criminal defendants will be released back into the community as the Safe-T Act kicks into action.
This Act was passed in 2020 but has been gaining attention now as nearly 111 days remain for January 1, 2023, to come.
The outlet notes that under the law, acts such as “aggravated batteries, robberies, burglaries, hate crimes, aggravated DUIs, vehicular homicide, drug-induced homicides, all drug offenses, including delivery of fentanyl and trafficking cases, are not eligible for detention unless the people prove by clear and convincing evidence the person has a high likelihood of willful flight to avoid prosecution.”
