Fried foods, livestock shows and action-packed entertainment — the apex of summer 2023 has finally arrived.
The 173rd Richland County Fair runs Sunday through Aug. 12 at the fairgrounds, 750 N. Home Rd. in Mansfield.

Admission is free for anyone 48 inches and under. For everyone else, it’s $8, according to Jim Schaub, president of the fair board.
“That gets you in the grandstands,” Schaub explained.
The gate fee has historically been $6, but then guests would also have to pay an extra fee of at least $5 to watch events from the grandstand. The new rate structure saves $3 or more for each person who attends a grandstand event.
“We’ve thought about it in the past,” Schaub said. “We’ve wanted to do something new to benefit the people of Richland County.”
Harness races and parimutuel wagering
The grandstands at the Richland County Fairgrounds seat 2,400 people. Now that those seats are free, fair board members hope they’re packed every night of the fair.
The week of attractions begins with harness races that start 5:30 p.m. both Sunday and Monday at the half-mile dirt track.
Parimutuel wagering will be available for spectators interested in testing their luck.
More than $80,000 in purses will be won by 2- and 3-year-old fillies and colts, both pacers and trotters.
The track record for pacing was lowered to 1:58.1 in 2020 by Swing City. The trotting track record of 2:01.0 was hit by Go Go Tiger in 2001 and then A TC Queenie in 2018.
Rodeo and touch-a-truck
Families will flock to the infield 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday evening for the fair’s touch-a-truck event.

“They’re going to have all kinds of vehicles: fire trucks, ambulances, construction and farming equipment,” Schaub said.
Everyone will be allowed to walk through the displays and interact directly with the vehicles’ owners and operators.
“Children, adults and people of all ages can actually touch the trucks,” Schaub said.
The rodeo begins 6 p.m. Wednesday. A concert will immediately follow.
“It’s by A-Bar Rodeo Productions,” Schaub said. “It’s sponsored by Phillips Manufacturing.”
In addition to the grandstand seats, reserved seating is also available for $10 a person.
“You can actually buy them there,” Schaub said.
The concert will begin immediately after the rodeo’s completion. The opening act will be Jeff Stauffer, followed by the headliner, Emily Raff.
Tractor pull, motocross and demolition derby
High-octane power will dominate the final three nights of the Richland County Fair.
The Ohio State Tractor Pullers Association tractor pull begins 7 p.m. Thursday.
“We’ve got more classes this year,” Schaub said.
The motocross event starts 6 p.m. Friday. The demolition derby begins 5 p.m. Saturday.

In addition to the free grandstand seating during the tractor pull, motocross and demolition derby, reserved seats will be available each night for $10 a chair. There will also be pit passes for sale for $10 a person and a back gate pass for $20 each.
$10 ride wristbands Wednesday afternoon
Wednesday will be “Kids Day” at this year’s fair.
Wristbands for rides will be on sale that day for just $10.
The wristbands will be $20 the rest of the week, except on Thursday, Friday and Saturday when they are $25.
Without a wristband, rides are $1 per ticket, with a special rate of 24 tickets for $20.
Rides open at noon each day.
Seniors and veterans will have special days at the fair
Senior citizens and military veterans will be honored during the 2023 Richland County Fair.
Everyone age 62 and older can enter the fair Monday for a reduced rate of just $5.
Armed Forces Day will be observed at the fair Thursday. Veterans and active-duty personnel alike will be admitted free all day Thursday.
“They have a meal for veterans at noon,” Schaub said. “That will be in the Fairhaven Hall.”
